[Voice] Winterfest Musings

Dec 16, 2010 13:51

[Only a voice post, but to anyone lurking in Alexandria castle, they'll find the army's general stealing a private moment to herself at the top of the West Tower. With the coming holiday season, her thoughts return to a perennial concern of hers.]

Winterfest begins in two days. I wonder, is it possible to truly attain forgiveness?

Forgiveness may be obtained from others, but it is forgiveness of oneself that is the trickiest.

I agree. Which then is true forgiveness?

From oneself. Even then, the guilt still remains.

From yourself, or from others?

[Beatrix pauses, giving the question genuine consideration.]

Both.

It's easier to achieve forgiveness from others.

[Forgiveness? Ah, Beatrix always seems a little unhappy at this time of year...

Steiner seeks her out at the top of the tower.]

Beatrix?

[The sound of Steiner's voice pulls Beatrix from her reverie and draws a small smile to her lips.]

Steiner... join me?

Of course.

[He does so, coming over to lay a gloved hand on her arm.]

Is something troubling you, Beatrix?

I suppose so.

Have you heard from Lady Freya lately?

[It's not a change of subject, just a continuation of her thoughts. She knows Steiner's unlikely to understand that implication, but still she should ask.]

[Rinoa recognises this voice and it frightens her. The renowned General of Alexandria, the woman who intimidated her so much when she was imprisoned. Why is she talking about attaining forgiveness?]

...General Beatrix?

[Beatrix recognizes that voice all too well and actually is partially who is on her mind. How can she condemn one girl after what she's done?]

Yes?

I - I was wondering. What you said about forgiveness... I don't understand... Why would you need it?

[Beatrix sees no point in concealing what is quite public knowledge.]

I laid waste to two countries and destroyed their people.

No, and I doubt I ever will.

Neither do I, yet I must find some soon. Necessity demands it.
