I know someone who lives there. She says that it used to gentrify but not anymore, it seems to be sliding to its old self. One thing is certain it is NOT full of hipster. It is not a hub for prostituion either but there is problem with street gangs now and then, but less than what I hear from my friends that live in Hochelaga. Also she moved from the Snowdon area and thinks that it is a great improvment. It does not prevent her from going out at night, though and she is not planning to move anywhere soon.
It's not hipster. It's much more that landowners there REALLY WISH they could convince people it was totally just like the plateau. The pointe (on the south side of the canal) has basically the same issue.
Stay away from the Montreal Strip Club and McDonald's and it's pretty safe at night.
I lived in St. Henri - near place st. Henri metro, at Notre-Dame and Ste-Maurgerite - about 4 years back. I quite liked it --- near the Atwater Market and the canal. Saw *far* fewer prostitutes than when I lived downtown.
I live in St. Henri near the metro south of Notre Dame and I love it! I'm out at night all the time and I've never had a problem. It's not super hipstery, and I've never seen a prostitute (although, I haven't actually gone looking either...) and I love how close to everything it is. Also, the rent is cheap :D
"To me, St-Henri looks like a gentrified neighbourhood full of hipsters. To my parents, St-Henri is a hub for prostitution where it's not safe to go out at night."
