There's a waiting period of 8 months in between the theory and the practical test, if you take driving lessons with an accredited school. If you don't, you have to wait 12 months.

This was true as of two years ago, at least.

Wow, I don't know where you're getting your info from but it's way wrong! You need 80% to pass on each of the 3 sections. If you fail one section, the regie will help schedule your next try. The next try will only be on the sections you failed. Once you pass, you must wait 8 months if you take lessons with a driving school or 12 months if you learn to drive on your own before you can take the driving exam. Scheduling for that exam is entirely up to you.

actually now for practical exams, there's a specific date of the month (I think either the 19th,20th or 21st) to get an appointment for 2 months later. So its kind of out of your hands.

You can do it online now and its SO much easier.

For the practical you have to get over 70 or 75% (can't remember which, I passed perfectly). Keep in mind if you make a major mistake (running a run, going through the stop sign...) you automatically fail.

Thing is for the practical you have no idea what they're grading you on or for how many points. I passed it too but I don't remember ever being given a grade *shrugs*

Well, when I took my exam a few years ago, you needed to get a certain number of questions right on the written exam. There are 3 parts; two have 18 questions, and you need to get at least 12 right; one had 24 questions and you need to get 18 right I think (something like that). If you're getting 70% on the practise questions, you're on the right track.
I think that the waiting period applies only if you are under 25 years old.
However, once you are assigned a specific test time for the practical exam, you can still call the SAAQ and take the exam earlier if there is a cancellation.

actually I'm in my thirties and had to take my license a few years ago (2004) and the waiting period applied no matter what your age was.

(I opted for the courses to reduce it to 8 months)

That may have changed since then.

When I took the theory exam in 2000, it was 70%. As soon as you have 70% of the total answers correct, it moves you to the next section of the test. I was shocked to see that I "only" got 70% on all of the sections, when I knew that I had not had any wrong answers in some of the sections. Then, I realized that they don't bother asking you more questions once you have enough right answers to pass.

I don't know what the percentage is on the practical. I didn't lose any points anywhere. :D

helpful reminder for the practical exam:
CHECK YOUR BLINDSPOTS WHEN TURNING. i lost points for that.
i didn't, rarely. still don't have the habit.
