Why do you read it? Why do you write it? What are the required/non-required elements? How is fanfiction different from other types of fiction? Is RPF/RPS okay? Are we weirdos for reading/writing? Are some pairings appropriate and others not? Are there limits to what is "allowable" in choice of pairing or kink

I'm so sorry you won't be writing more. Are you sure? Never say never. :)
pairings of people/characters you already know, people that you're already slashing inside your head Great observation. I was slashing hot guys in my head well before I discovered fanfiction. My imagination is okay but I certainly love to see what other authors can imagine. I read Mark Twain and Emily Bronte because they think up things I didn't think up, so it's wonderful to visit their imaginations. Same thing with great fanfic writers.
I'm not sure if the RL-married couple thing would be a block for me. I know what you are saying and it makes sense. I guess most of my fandoms have had unattached/unmarried pairings.
I cannot WAIT for more of the new Sherlock Holmes. ~sitting on hands waiting impatiently

Discovering fanfic way back when was the answer for me wanting more or a different ending to whatever TV show/book I was into like Harry Potter/Snape, Queer as Folk's Brian and Justin, Torchwood and Doctor Who, oh gosh I could go on. There does not seem to be many m/m published books but with fanfic there is a huge amount.
My favourite of course is Adam and Tommy Joe. Hearing Adam talk about fanfic when introducing Tommy on stage made me squeal with laughter. I think they both get it and that there is no harm in it but saying that I hope they don't actually read Adommy fic...
Its been really interesting the comments here - thanks for starting the post.

Adam and Tommy Joe are a perfect pair for angst, humor, love, whatever. I love their attitude. I'm guessing they looked at some of the fanfic and went "oh" and maybe that was it. Because if it were you, could you resist just a peek?
