What is fanfic FOR?

Why do you read it? Why do you write it? What are the required/non-required elements? How is fanfiction different from other types of fiction? Is RPF/RPS okay? Are we weirdos for reading/writing? Are some pairings appropriate and others not? Are there limits to what is "allowable" in choice of pairing or kink?

I'm asking out of curiosity. Some people hanging around the Adam fandom seem not to understand the purpose of fanfic. That is, there's no single purpose, but some people fail to have even the remotest understanding.

Having written RPS about Adam and Tommy, I was actually relieved at the way they acted about it at the recent concert in Canada: they clearly find it amusing. Adam's a very sexual being and he shares that openly when performing so I wasn't at all surprised, but it was a relief to know for certain. (Although I'll throw in an opening opinion for the post: It is extremely crass to tweet fanfic links to the individuals.)

So I'd love to hear what others think. What is fanfic FOR?

Edit: Those questions in the beginning are sort of meant to trigger thoughts or to represent questions that one might consider is thinking about "What is fanfic for?" Don't feel a need to address every one of them - just talk about whatever aspect of fanfic intrigues you. :)
