Work It, Baby!

I've needed to add phsyical exercise to my life for a long time. I have some health issues that make various forms of exercise bad for me and walking Velcro Dog doesn't cut it anymore so this month I started looking for Pilates instructors who don't require you hand over your first born in payment and who are located relatively near where I live. I'd say give the pilates place a try. Even if you can go only once a month maybe they can give you so exercises you can do on your own for the weeks in between. But its good to get an instructor's input on the correct way to do things.

Be careful with the yoga class. I think it is worth trying but with our sorts of health problems we have to be careful and I'm suspicious of a form of yoga that gives you a "workout" and is supposed to be "faster". Yoga is all about slow and steady. You don't need to sweat to tone and get stronger. Make sure you are getting the positions right so you don't do more damage.

I did some more research and unless I want to be locked into 8 sessions a month for 12 months, the private sessions and classes are fairly much the same price. There is a place closer to me that I think I'll try. I will start with 5 private sessions and plan for one a week and will ask about what I can do at home to keep forward momentum.

I did the yoga class tonight. OMG, hard! I'm way out of shape so spent a lot of time in child's pose, lol! I let the instructor know I have a back/hip issue and fibro and need nice and easy. He gave me a lot of modified poses to do, spent a lot of time with me and my posture and I went at my snail's pace. I'm still sore. Huh. I was never sore after Pilates so I wonder if it's because it was hot yoga (heated room) or if it's because I'm that out of shape. Either way, I think I'll start with the Pilates and maybe work in the yoga as I feel stronger and more capable. It was good to try, though.

Good for you for going and trying. Sounds like the instructor knew what he was doing with giving you the modified poses and instruction. You know one way to get familiar with the poses is to get a DVD. I think it is Gaiman that has a whole series of pretty decent yoga DVDS. One of them introduces you to all the poses.

I also think staying away from the heated yogas is better in the beginning. You are going to get warm enough just moving around without the added heat.

I prefer classes. I feel like you have the choice to be anonymous or sociable. I think you'll be fine!

I did yoga for a few months and it was hard. It was asthanga yoga and I wish I'd known about the different types before I'd started. I had to do a headstand in my first lesson! I used to go once a week and I was always in pain the day after. In hindisght the instructor pushed me too far.

I don't like classes as much because I'm fat and self conscious about being so out of shape, lol. The type of yoga I did was hard. The place calls it Power Vinyasa, though I have no idea about the different types of yoga. They do offer restorative yoga based on Yin yoga that I may try.

I'm out of shape but I just stay at the back!

Yaya you for going!

Thanks. I went with a friend who is working on yoga trainer certification so I was a little more self concious with her.

I did learn hat Vinyasa yoga is - it's yoga that flows through poses on inhales or exhales so it's continual. Yeah, I think I need to learn the poses before I can do this again. On the plus side, I tried something new and healthy for myself!

I've done yoga at a gym before but I always checked that it was a basic class. No handstand for me, thanks! I am struggling to pick up my workout routine again so I know how great friends can be in motivating you to work out.

This was a beginner class. They did have the crow pose which I didn't attempt. My arms can't handle balancing on my hands, thank you very much. Like I said, I'm a sloth and have the muscle mass to prove it.

I'm glad I did the class, but I think I'll be doing Pilates 2-4 times a month with private sessions and then mix in mat classes or reformer classes when I'm ready.

I've never done yoga or pilates but I'm currently doing Plana Forma (http://www.forma-asia.com). It's based on Physique 57 and is a combination of yoga, pilates and jazz. It was a bit intimidating taking classes with all these skinny girls at first but during the class, you tend to forget about the other people and just concentrate on your workout. I never worked out before I tried Forma but now I love, love, LOVE it! :) I think the class environment helps because you know the others are suffering with you. After every set, everyone just groans at the same time. LOL Do you have friends who can take classes with you? I usually go to my classes by myself because my friends and I have different schedules but it's extra fun when I'm with a friend ( ... )
