You know, I almost passed over this set of entries, because I couldn't imagine how people would get something interesting out of that topic. Your piece makes me glad I didn't! Excellent job. Sorry you had to go through all that, though. But your ability to recapture the feelings you had at that time was amazing.
I had to wear one of those things, too, only I was in the 3rd and 4th grade when I got mine. I got to thinking about my frankel (only my orthodontist referred to it as an FR), did an internet search, and found your blog. My brother, 3 years older than me, had to get braces and a headgear to correct his overbite and other problems, whereas I was younger with a more malleable mouth and thus wound up with a frankel. Oh my God, I didn't think I would ever get to hear anyone else talk about how weird and frustrating it was to wear that thing
