Post-2008 Tony Award Blogging

Some disclaimers before we start:

I do not like farces, except for Bedroom Farce, but I feel that the title is a misnomer. My disdain for farces made me not very happy with Boeing-Boeing winning Best Revival of a Play instead of The Homecoming or Macbeth. Not to mention, I don't think that Boeing-Boeing is that great of a play in the first place.

I do not like South Pacific that much either. It does not have to do with the fact that I saw a high school production of the show, because I saw a pretty decent high school production of it. It is mostly because almost every number has to be a production (I say almost every number because "Some Enchanted Evening" does not fit this description). It has to be huge and extravegant, and I don't like it. I find South Pacific to be cheesy in fact. But in comparison, at least Grease didn't win Best Revival of a Musical.

I had to watch a taped version of the Tonys because I was at rehearsal for Into the Woods when it was broadcast, which is a pretty good reason to miss the Tonys.

I'm not torn up over Raúl Esparza not getting a Tony for his performance in The Homecoming. I read an interview where he sounded rather suprised that he even was nominated. I just don't get torn up over certain people not winning.

All of August: Osage County's wins did not suprise me at all. I've read the script and it is phenomenal play.

Another win that didn't suprise me: Patti LuPone. I was breathless during "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and it's Patti LuPone as Mama Rose. Holy shit, it's Patti LuPone as Mama Rose. I am jealous of the people that I know that saw it in New York. And I loved her speech. Loved it.

The Tony Awards were interrupted here by flood updates. However, the flood updates interrupted Boeing-Boeing winning the award, and musical numbers from Young Frankenstein and South Pacific. The only one I wasn't pleased with was them interrupting the number from Passing Strange.

I honestly had no clue that Arthur Laurents was still alive.

And even though In the Heights is not a traditional musical, I liked the musical number and that is possibly the only way I could enjoy hip-hop music. And as long as it or Passing Strange won, I would be happy. I love John Waters, but I did not like the musical number from Cry Baby.

I also enjoyed Lin-Manuel Miranda making a referrence to Sunday in the Park With George in his speech.

Another thing that annoyed me, Sunday in the Park With George not winning any awards. I was crying during Move On and I do not cry easily. If a musical makes me cry, it deserves at least one Tony Award. But that's my logic. I'm mostly saying this because I love Sunday in the Park With George and because of how wonderful the musical number was.

But most of the wins were not suprising.

august: osage county, patti lupone, my beef with farces, david hyde pierce, south pacific, in the heights, sunday in the park with george, boeing-boeing, raul esparza, tony awards, a pinter play, arthur laurents, passing strange
