Sounds good! If you don't want to go too far, there's a nice walk along the river between Amberley and Arundel Castle. I've thought of staying at a B&B near Amberley, and there's a good pub there; and the Amberley Working Museum, which I still haven't visited but sounds intriguing. Arundel castle's gorgeous. If you wanted to shell out a lot of money, you can stay at Amberley Castle, but I think there was some more reasonable B&B nearby.
Fowey in Cornwall is also very nice, and you can hike to the Eden Project and around Fowey.
Soz, been a bit slow at getting back to people. Thanks for the tip -- that's a bit of the country I'm not familiar with. I know bits of Cornwall and Devon, and bits of Sussex but not the bits in between! Amberley Castle does look rather nice, but a bit out of my price range I think!
I still haven't been to the Eden Project or Heligan, so going back to Cornwall's been on my list for ages, but maybe it would be nice to visit somewhere new.
Hey, I'd really like to get out into the countryside this summer, so if you're looking for a companion...
I don't have a car but I do have a driving license, so hiring a car is an option, but I quite like the idea of seeing how far its possible to get using public transport. There are lots of areas nearish to London that I've never been to, and would really like to explore; Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, the South Downs, parts of the coast line.
All of those places sound good. There are quite a few places on the coast that are doable as day trips, but not without a car, so if you fancied a couple of those that would be cool -- maybe we could drag some others along as well, pack up a picnic lunch and hit a pub for dinner? Places like Dungeoness, Southwold, Cromer (the latter two are home to friend's parents, so could meet up with friends whilst there, but the friends themselves don't drive!) No doubt a whole bunch of others if I start looking into it...
Currently looking into follies, but my book is a bit out of date annoyingly. Some of them are National Trust properties which makes things easier!
Unfortunately, bike is also out as I never learned to ride one. I refused to do so age 5, for reasons which are lost in time, and never learned to subsequently. Rather annoyingly limiting, I know. I like hiking, though.
Oh, also, as far as dates are concerned, the upcoming bank holiday weekend is free, and the first half of June. First and last weekends in July are so far, too. Not so sure about the rest; there's stuff I want to do but none of its booked exclusively as yet.

Do you have a bike, by the way?
