1040X time

Seems I screwed up my taxes, and my youngest's, by claiming him as a dependent when I should not have. I will have to pay more but he'll get a little back from this. PitA! I have two 1040X submittals and two RI1040X's on top of these ( Read more... )

He's no longer in college, and I ass-umed he was my dependent until 21... considering what it costs to maintain him ;o)

These are the nuances of the law one slowly forgets when relying solely on a program for taxes. And it was HR Block, a program I paid for, not a webfront mystery site.

Bah!

Bah indeedy! You said it well... people forget and develop a disconnect to the ACTUAL forms when they use these "interview questionnaire style" programs... I wish there was one that let you SEE the forms are it guided you along filling them out... but I haven't seen one yet....

The program I use actually let's you see the form, if you wish, and if you ask it to guide you it asks more questions. I want it to ask those questions outright, and if I catch a penalty on top of the added 'missed' original payment I may ask HR Block for an explanation.

I liked the disconnect when I got money back...

I can definitely feel your pain having dealt with the IRS in the past. On more than one occasion I have caught them with contradictory or vague statements in their instructions. Like I posted a few weeks back, I'm a smart guy who does a lot of math on a daily basis. If even I can't make heads or tails out of this shit, how is the average Joe supposed to navigate the numerical minefield?!?

Awful minefield! The instructions for the State are even less clear. My only bit of luck is thay I can run the taxes back through the program 'correctly' and compare the results I get to what I try to do manually on their Chinese columned menu. Even that baffled me because I didn't understand their instuctions and had an $18 dollar difference due to adding in a penalty for under-withholding originally.
