Painting Parasols

When I was at Hobby Lobby today, I picked up a couple of Asian style parasols on the markdown aisle. The handle and frame is bamboo and it's covered in rice or tissue paper with a sealant. I'm seriously thinking of painting them but not quite sure how to proceed. One of them has a tiny hole so it's the experimental one. I'm thinking that I could

I've seen (and bought) already painted ones like that before. I *think* they were done in Acrylic. That's what it looks like anyway.
