MOTW: Cars

Pixar's done it again. Visually brilliant, good story, and humour to make you laugh. Cars was definitely entertaining, and I enjoyed myself. Perhaps I'm getting old and cynical (or maybe just older and more cynical) but there seemed to be something lacking. Cars just wasn't as good or as fresh as The Incredibles, and seemed to not be quite as funny as the Toy Stories or Monsters, Inc. And, as MarchHare pointed out, they're still using the same basic plot - "Life is better if you've got friends." Ok, not a bad message, and certainly something kids can latch on to, but it's getting a little tedious.

I'm not a car buff so the fine technical details of the cars themselves didn't overawe me, but a lot of the backgrounds looked really natural... like they were hand painted rather than in a CG environment. No doubt they were probably hand painted before being rendered, but that doesn't matter too much. Didn't notice any brand new spectacular animation techniques in action here (as in the previous films, e.g. hair, clothing, wind, water) but it's not such a big deal.

The "One Man Band" short at the beginning was also a return to form - a no dialogue animation can be quite funny! The unfortunate "Boundin'" short that was shown before The Incredibles wasn't nearly as good as any of the other Pixar shorts.

So Cars is definitely a worthy addition to the Pixar family of CG movies,
and should delight any tiny tots you may happen to know. But I still rate The Incredibles and Toy Story above the others, due to their plot, story and dialogue - areas where the others do well, but don't excel.

8/10
