(X-posted to my usual journal...)

Lord almighty. Did everybody else know this already? George Lucas & co. ripped off Margaret Mitchell. Seriously.

I'm reading Gone With the Wind--and finding it totally cool, by the way--and just came across this little scene between Scarlett and Rhett that looked oddly familiar ( Read more... )

i do think it is probably a tribute...erm..kinda cool in a way. yes a lot borrowed but that may well be intentional. interesting to find out.

I'm inclined to think it was intentional; the original Star Wars movies are full of old-movie references (or ripoffs, if you want to take a negative view). In this case the borrower must have been Leigh Brackett or Lawrence Kasdan, because if George Lucas had written that scene it would have gone:

HAN: You like me.
LEIA: No I don't.
HAN: Yes you do.
LEIA: No I don't.
HAN: Yes you do.
LEIA: No I don't.
HAN: Yes you do.
LEIA: OK, I do.

I noticed the similarity today after reading that part of the book and googled it to see if anyone else had made the connection too....and found your page.
GL blatantly took it from the book and just changed the phraseing :P

Yeah, figures, doesn't it? One of the only really cute dialogue exchanges in the Lucas films, and he stole it. :)
