So my building recently got bought out by another company and they are doing tons of remodeling and such. I went up to their office the other day and found this stupid:
Braille always amazes me, because half of the time when it is on a sign I am wondering how a blind person knows the sign is there in the first place. An example is the elevator in my building - the buttons and everything are on the right side in the normal place, but recently they put up tiny direction signs waaaay up high on the left side and mgmt is soooo proud that now they have a sign with braille. A person would have to be basically groping the walls to find this sign, not to mention that the edges of the sign are sharp, so the wall-groper is going to get a nasty surprise.
I think many blind people actually do see a little, like blobs and such, just not very well at all. So they could possibly see that there is a sign then feel the sign for the braille.
Ok that does make sense, I was thinking only of totally blind people. And then there's still the fact that if people are going to be considerate enough to make braille signs in the first place, you'd think they would make the signs 1. actually raised so they can be read and 2. not surprisingly sharp and cutty.
Actually, the dots say WOMEN. The two "apostrophes" at the beginning of the word indicate all capital letters. The last symbol is the "en" contraction.
