All I'm saying is, my hometown may be responsible for Bush having won the presidency in 2000, BUT at least we can properly secure construction equipment for a hurricane, which is more than New York can say at the moment. SUCK IT, NORTHERNERS.

Er, having said that, please stay safe everyone!!

I personally am puzzled not only by the construction equipment but also by the various pictures of people who taped their windows hoping that helps. Yeah, it might help you find the big pieces later but that's about it. Oh, and I hope they all have manual can openers in case the power doesn't come on for days.

And I'm still certain I voted for Buchanan in 2000.

Ahhhh taped windows. We taped our windows for Andrew because it was the first major storm my parents had experienced in Florida, and that was before people completely realized that IT DOES NOT WORK. Anyway, if Andrew had hit Palm Beach County instead of Miami I'm pretty sure our house would have been absurdly damaged because taping windows is so so pointless. I can't believe people are still doing this.

And dude - whenever people make fun of me for being from a place where no one can vote, I ask them if they've ever actually SEEN the ballots that were used that year. They were so confusing. My mom apparently stood there for like 5 minutes when she was voting making sure she had picked Gore, it was such a terrible ballot.

I even saved the really crappy sample ballot and put it in Damien's "Time Capsule" thing so he could one day see how something so tiny could change the world forever.

I would have stood there for five minutes but I had a four year old with me and he ran out the door of the room where we were voting and I had to chase after him. I wanted to ask the poll workers about the ballot but there were these signs up telling us we had to remain silent. WTF? Now looking back it was all something that should have been questioned at the time.

We were on the other side of Florida for Hurricane Andrew and that sucker blew our fence down and all sorts of other nasty stuff. Tape wouldn't have helped.

We were wondering about that one, too. It seems like a strikingly obvious thing one could deal with in advance.

Yeah, I was reading the NYT article about it and apparently the proper procedure for securing cranes in hurricanes has something to do about angles and making sure they blow with the wind, rather than against it, and that's what they do in Florida/Louisiana/etc when hurricanes are approaching. And the Times is claiming that they did that to the crane in NYC too, but it just got hit by a blast of wind from multiple directions at once or something...but I mean, I'm sorry. This storm is terrible in terms of rain and flooding, but wind-speed-wise, it's only a category 1. So I have to question how well they truly did whatever this procedure is to the crane if it couldn't even withstand 80 mph winds.
