I think that is generally true, though the size/weight can offset the calmness benefit. I think he wants to be able to pick the dog up, which means it needs to weigh less than 15 pounds. And I've known some large dogs that had small dog energy, especially an English Sheepdog that lived down the street and would come barrelling at you at full speed, full of friendly good intentions. It was always a race to get inside the door before he reached you and knocked you to the ground.
Miniature dachshunds are a great suggestion. You're the second person to suggest them, so I may go looking for a rescue in the next day or two.
I don't know if your dad's interested in getting a cat, but I've heard that ragdoll cats are often used as companion animals for seniors because they're so placid and low-maintenance.
Dad's okay with cats, but he's really a dog person. And his wife is even worse with cats than she is with dogs. My cat loathes her. He hides under the bed when she's in my condo. But thank you very much for the link. They sound like awesome cats and I really do want one now.

Dad's okay with cats, but he's really a dog person. And his wife is even worse with cats than she is with dogs. My cat loathes her. He hides under the bed when she's in my condo. But thank you very much for the link. They sound like awesome cats and I really do want one now.
