If it's done right, asparagus is brilliant, a bit crunchy but not stringy or mushy, a delicate tangy taste with just a tiny hint of sour (not bitter).
But never eat that asparagus in the can from the grocery store - if you ever do eat, wait to try it in a really good restaurant where it's cooked properly and just right. My favorite is bits of asparagus with pasta in a cream or creme rosa sauce with bits of artichoke (also another vegetable to try only when it's properly done in a good restaurant) and shrimp and crawfish and mushrooms.
Artichokes are more sour than asparagus, but not lemon sour, it's a different kind of taste and they can also be excellent in a cold pasta salad with black olives and a good olive oil and just a touch of vinegar and some oregano or chives.

Yes to artichokes being a delivery system for melted butter! Whatever god of good food there is designed them specifically for that purpose by making them a fun finger food and by causing their heart to be somewhat bowl shaped so that they hold even more of the good stuff when you're through removing the leaves.
If someone served me bitter asparagus, I would send it back!
And drkcherry, you should definitely listen to mer1973 and gets some asparagus from aithine. That way you can at least say you've tried it.
Yep, "springy" is about the best I can do for the asparagus.
You really should see Lone Star. Matthew McConaughey has a small but wonderful part, and Kris Kristofferson is excellent, as is Chris Cooper. All of John Sayles' stuff is good, but my very favorites are Matewan and Lone Star.
Your sister's never seen Princess Bride? The blasphemy!
Oh, another Lone Star rec! I told A and DM I'd put it on the top of my queue, so I should see it soon. It does sound very good. DM really likes John Sayles in general, as well.
In my sister's defense, although she has never seen the movie, she claims she has read the book. But DM promised me he would make sure she sees The Princess Bride movie as soon as possible after they are both home.
Ditto on Lone Star! It's a wonderful movie, great characters, intricate plot and wonderful actors! One of John Sayles best movies, definitely worth watching.
That's 3 recs now (4 if you include my sister in addition to her boyfriend) for Lone Star. And two from Alices! ;) So, I will not just put it on my queue, I will bump it to the top.
