We advertised for a supervisor position here, that is still empty. My dad knew someone who is more than qualified and sent me his resume'. When I gave it to my boss, she looked it over and said "how old is this guy?". I replied that I didn't know, but she looked over his job history and said "oh, I have an idea". So there ya go. As for that woman. At 57, she should have had way more than $180,000 in an IRA account to retire on, unless she planned on retiring at 80 yrs old. And cutting back by forgoing shopping sprees at Nordstrom. No sympathy there. However, I do know there's a lot of truth to that article. No one is hiring someone that age, regardless of experience or qualifications. It's good that she's improving her skills and she's still trying. You never know. Someone in charge of hiring who is blind to age could give her a shot.
We're still in a recession. There's not a lot of jobs out there and employers are looking to get their money's worth. And while no one likes it, deliver newspapers or clean hotel rooms for a while.
what I've discovered is that it's not all that uncommon. Wayne State offers a good 4013B plan and they match what we put in, up to 10%, which is kind of rare. Most companies dropped the matching benefit when the economy tanked. Now you know why so many people who complain about Wayne State don't go looking for another job. When Ruth was working in Toledo, they didn't take social security out of her check, which seemed crazy to me. Wouldn't that majorly screw you over eventuallY? It all depends on where you work and what they offer. Mike's 4013B where he works is meh, but it's better than nothing.
I have a 401K, but in order to retire, according to my sister, I would need a separate IRA to do it. But I've never had the idea that I would retire like my parents.
