RIP. Rest in Peace. Requiescat in pace (in the Latin). Between Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, and now Michael Jackson, I have been hearing a lot of "RIP." I realize it saves space in Twitter and conveys well-wishes, but I hope no one curses me like that after I'm gone ( Read more... )

I think most people just say it because it's the accepted way to show respect, like putting a marker on a grave.

Personally, I don't believe in an afterlife. I think once we're gone, we're gone. We're just matter that's rotting in the earth, or has been reduced to a pile of ashes. But it's hard to say that without seeming really callous and uncaring, so I sometimes use RIP as a sort of polite alternative.

Well I guess it depends on your interpretation of Peace. When I think "Rest In Peace" I don't think eternal happiness. I think of wishing them tranquility, the elimination of what ever earthly emotions or situations that were hard on them. When I wish RIP to Farrah, Michael, or Ed, I wish them ease from the pain of their illness, the hardship of financial crisis, or what ever strife made this life hard for them. I wish them the hope that in their next life or the afterlife they can make peace with what ever demons pursued them in this life, that they find what ever they looked for and didn't find in this one ( ... )
