Thanksgiving Ramble

Nov 17, 2005 11:32

I am so excited about Thanksgiving this year, its ridiculous. I've already planned out my whole menu and made a shopping list (I'm really compulsive about planning ahead sometimes). My dad and his very significant other get into town tomorrow night, then my mom and her husband arrive Monday, and Charlotte gets here Wednesday. None of them have ( Read more... )

Wow. Sounds like it'll be a fantastic time.

This'll be my first Thanksgiving without my family. I expect I'll miss it quite a bit.

Have a fun week!

No plans at the moment, really. Might end up at a coworker's place, not sure.

There was a lot of kitchen territorialism when I lived with Cyndy.

15,000 is a lot of words. Good luck!

This will be my first Thanksgiving that I'm doing! ^_^ So I'm totally getting what you're talking about... my mom's not really into cooking, whereas I'm really into trying difficult and unusual recipes all the time. I offered to do Thanksgiving this year since my parents are putting in some much effort and funds into my wedding, and my mom agreed, but I still wonder if she felt a little like her territory had been invaded. We're the only family that's local, but back when we were in Arizona, there was a delicate dance when it came to deciding who did what holiday, especially after my cousin married and established her own household and kitchen.

But I'm really enjoying planning for it, researching recipes, making timetables, all that. I haven't got much in the way of Thanksgiving decor, but the table spread should be awesome. And it'll be a good size group of people anyhow - my parents and brother, my brother in law and his wife, a friend of ours... Potentially others. It's cool ^_^

Sounds like fun! Have you found any particularly good recipes? Do you need a good recipe for anything? I'd be happy to do some recipe swapping, if you're intersted.

Either way, good luck on your preparations. It sounds like yours will be as much fun as I'm expecting mine to be. :)

I'm thinking I will be making:

Miso-rubbed Turkey with gravy
Seared Halibut with chanterelle-saffron cream sauce
Cranberry relish (mix of fruits, brandy)
Cheesy sweet and savory spuds (mix of white and sweet potatoes)
Sage sausage and apple stuffing
Wild Northwest Mushroom Soup (small bowls)
Brussels sprouts and mushrooms with garlic butter
Steamed broccoli and cauliflower
Cornbread and mini challah rolls

My mom’s bringing some sort of cheesecake, plus some pumpkin butter for the rolls.

I’m also making pumpkin pie (seeking a good recipe for this) with homemade whipped cream, and probably buy some mini cream puffs to stack up.

I'll probably also have a few "plain" items available, since there's one extremely picky eater coming (that bugs the heck outta me, people that are that picky). Like maybe the directions to Jack in the Box.

will you be here at all around christmas? your yule brunch was so wonderful last year. :)

i totally love thanksgiving. it's actually one of my favorite holidays, which makes me saddish this time around because i'm going to be so stressed and busy, and because we won't be doing a big "family" thing hereabouts. *sigh*

my nano novel is the subject of much heartache in these parts.

i miss you!

You can always hitch a ride with us up to Upper Michigan and have Thanksgiving in a log cabin with Carl's family. They take in pretty much anyone (as evidenced by the fact that every year, I've brought a friend of mine who lived up in Marquette until this year), and about half of their town. Plus, it'd give me someone to ignore my brother-in-law with on the car ride up and down :P

I love the whole "urban family" thing. I wish I was closer to mine this year.

I'm only at 10k, so at least you're ahead of me. Of course, I'm all into the GRE now, so... oh well...
