Thanksgiving Ramble

I am so excited about Thanksgiving this year, its ridiculous. I've already planned out my whole menu and made a shopping list (I'm really compulsive about planning ahead sometimes). My dad and his very significant other get into town tomorrow night, then my mom and her husband arrive Monday, and Charlotte gets here Wednesday. None of them have ( Read more... )

This will be my first Thanksgiving that I'm doing! ^_^ So I'm totally getting what you're talking about... my mom's not really into cooking, whereas I'm really into trying difficult and unusual recipes all the time. I offered to do Thanksgiving this year since my parents are putting in some much effort and funds into my wedding, and my mom agreed, but I still wonder if she felt a little like her territory had been invaded. We're the only family that's local, but back when we were in Arizona, there was a delicate dance when it came to deciding who did what holiday, especially after my cousin married and established her own household and kitchen.

But I'm really enjoying planning for it, researching recipes, making timetables, all that. I haven't got much in the way of Thanksgiving decor, but the table spread should be awesome. And it'll be a good size group of people anyhow - my parents and brother, my brother in law and his wife, a friend of ours... Potentially others. It's cool ^_^

Sounds like fun! Have you found any particularly good recipes? Do you need a good recipe for anything? I'd be happy to do some recipe swapping, if you're intersted.

Either way, good luck on your preparations. It sounds like yours will be as much fun as I'm expecting mine to be. :)

I'm thinking I will be making:

Miso-rubbed Turkey with gravy
Seared Halibut with chanterelle-saffron cream sauce
Cranberry relish (mix of fruits, brandy)
Cheesy sweet and savory spuds (mix of white and sweet potatoes)
Sage sausage and apple stuffing
Wild Northwest Mushroom Soup (small bowls)
Brussels sprouts and mushrooms with garlic butter
Steamed broccoli and cauliflower
Cornbread and mini challah rolls

My mom’s bringing some sort of cheesecake, plus some pumpkin butter for the rolls.

I’m also making pumpkin pie (seeking a good recipe for this) with homemade whipped cream, and probably buy some mini cream puffs to stack up.

I'll probably also have a few "plain" items available, since there's one extremely picky eater coming (that bugs the heck outta me, people that are that picky). Like maybe the directions to Jack in the Box.

Oooh... that sounds really good. Well, most of it ... I'm not a fan of sausage or the shrooms, but otherwise, sounds fabulous. I happen to have an excellent basic pumpkin pie recipe, which I'd be happy to send you, especially in exchange for that halibut recipe. I also have a pumpkin cheesecake with bourbon sauce recipe, if you want that, too/instead.

Sometime, after all the holidays and your wedding stuff is done, we ought to have a cooking party. Or something. Just a thought. :)

I'd love that! When 'Iron Chef America' premiered, I had a dinner party that had three main dishes and some desserts, all in small portions. Unfortuantly I have few friends that are really into cooking, otherwise we would have done something more awesome, like a mini Iron Chef show of our own.

I've been developing the Halibut recipe, so I'll get back to you when I've recorded the final recipe. I'd love the basic pie recipe, but I don't really care for cheesecakes (I was surprised when my mom said she was bringing one for us, when I'm pretty sure she knows I'm not into them and Ben's not all that into desserts in general).

I'd definitly love to have more dinner/cooking parties with you. I'm always interested in trying new things and learning, but haven't got many people to learn from... rather, I just experiement and try it out on people. I want to take some cooking classes at some point... especially pastries, and advanced techniques.
