Honor or Miles (A rant requested by firstfrost)

Cruises and sitting on a jury both involve a lot of waiting, so I've been plowing through the Vorkosigan books Firstfrost is making me read. She presented them initially as, "like Honor Harrington but good," which of course miffed me as a Weber fan, but I'm reading them.

After four books, I do have to say that Bujold appears to have a greater command of ( Read more... )

The implausible coincidence factor gets a little better in the middle books, as I recall, but the series is definitely in the genre of goofy-actiony TV shows as far as plotting and the plausibility thereof are concerned.

What Desiree said.

On the other hand, it's been years since I wanted to read a David Weber book, even the ones I own and haven't read (Torch of Freedom), but I re-read LMB when my fiancé finally listened to me and read them. I just think LMB is a better writer, with thrilling stories and fewer info dump paragraphs.

I think this totally sums up the difference between you and firstfrost. Not in a bad way.

I like each series for different reasons. Honor is intriguing. Miles is *fun* (well, except for _Memory_, but that was LMB's divorce book, so we've made allowances). I usually laugh out loud reading the Miles books. The improbability of Miles' stories doesn't bother me; it's part of the charm. He falls into manure and comes up smelling like roses. And I enjoy the later books in the series, while it's getting harder to read Weber (who needs an editor willing to tell him to cut 100 pages from his later books). I love _A Civil Campaign_ and I just finished reading _Captain Vorpatril's Alliance_, which stars his cousin Ivan (who is no longer "you idiot" when Miles is not around).

It doesn't bother you that Weber can't do character development without killing off a loved one or just plain torture?

There's plenty to complain about from both authors, but I'll still be reading Bujold long after I've given up on Weber.

I still read Game of Thrones. Weber knows nothing about death and torture in comparison...
