Actually Monica, 1984 had a huge point. It is an excellent mystery/suspense novel exploring the depths of the human psyche when faced with totalitarianism. Orwell did a marvelous job protesting totalitarianism, but anyone could do that. What sent this novel above and beyond is how he analyzed the psychological effects on Winston when facing the Thought Police. When he is in the room where there is no darkness, his thoughts and everything he says to O'Brien is very realistic, suprisingly enough in such a fantasy tale.
Put yourself in Winston's shoes, think how you would think in his situation, then you can truly appreciate 1984 in its natural beauty.
And perhaps you might pretend, afterwards, that it was only a trick and that you just said it to make them stop and didn’t really mean it. But that isn’t true. At the time when it happens you do mean it. You think there’s no other way of saving yourself and you’re quite ready to save yourself that way. You want it to happen to the other person. You don’t give a damn what they suffer. All you care about is yourself.

In looking towards the bigger picture, you will see that focus on the individual detrimines society's potential. Let's take a look at what has made America the greatest. I would like to focus on the Great Depression since this is when you will see America at its best. If you look at what was done to kick our country back in gear it was more of a socialist structure. This was a time when everyone banded together to help each other out. If you were layed off and short on food, your neighbors would try to help you out. In the mid west, when rivers would flood over to the farms, people would come together and rebuild the barns and houses that were destroyed and replanted their crops. This is all slightly jive-ish, so i'm going to aim at other things

Bob, if you want to know why socialism doesn't work just look at the anemic growth rate of European economies, the failures of South American economies, or the problems in the Soviet Union

Actually I liked the book. Haha. I just didnt like some of the parts. And I don't like doing book reports. I was just mad at having to write. Im a lazy bum!! :)
Bob, what I don't understand is, if you're so skeptical of intentions of federal programs such as the FDA, why you advocate socialism, where the government controls almost everything.
