what writers do

Neil Gaiman posted on Twitter to say “I am sitting in an Indianapolis Starbucks writing a speech in a moleskine notebook. I feel like a lazy writer’s idea of what a writer does.”

This amused me inordinantly. :) I think it’s what people who want to have written think writers do. And people who talk about needing to Feel Their Muse before they can ( Read more... )

writing, climate change

Welcome, Mankind, to the 21st Century. Just in case you were wondering, you are still Mother Nature’s bitch.”

Word.

Also, to the folk I just saw on the news at local airports, bitching because nobody will tell them anything -- dudes and dudettes, they don't know. They're scrambling to find cots and whatnot for y'all, and worrying if they're going to have jobs when the cost of all this shakes out, and they Just. Don't. Know.

But they do know, and you should too, that you do NOT want your bird flying through those clouds. So we're really terribly sorry but short of putting you on a boat (and I'm amazed some cruise ship line hasn't tried to take advantage of this by offering cheap travel to Europe for those stranded), there's not much anyone can do. :-(

Something I've discovered is that once you're firmly entrenched in a career, it can be difficult to imagine how outsiders perceive that field. Greg and I have had numerous conversations about the catering/restaurant business, because he's been in for nearly 20 years and doesn't understand how people could not know to ask certain questions. I've seen this happen with computer geeks, too.

I was up until recently a buyer for a large e-commerce company. Now, I do project management for the team I used to work on.

I dunno about you, but most of my scriptwriting of the last year involved me sitting in bed with my laptop, swearing.

I figure it has to be like amateur versus professional in any other field...the amateur feels 'inspired', and does some work. The professional wakes up, has a headache, isn't feeling well, has a dozen other things to do, it's raining...and works.

Waiting for your muse is a luxury :)

People who think like that should call in to their day jobs and say they won't be in until the muse speaks to them.
