Okay. Copyedits done, at least in the first pass. Tomorrow I’ll have to go through them again and either type them up or at least make sure my changes are clear enough, so that the manuscript can go back in the mail (at horrific expense) on Monday. You know I have to sell about 100 copies of the book to break even every time I ship the manuscript ( Read more... )

I have to admit that I'm puzzled why publishers aren't at least offering their writers the option of electronic copy editing. I know that not all writers _like_ them, but everyone who lives an ocean apart from their publisher is kvetching about the time and expense - you could eliminate two weeks and a significant amount of dollars from the schedule at the press of a button. Most writers these days submit electronic files to their editors; a very large percentage of copy editors is already copy editing electronically (I won't touch paper at all) - but there seems to be a certain reluctance among fiction publishers to change.

My Luna stuff has all gone electronic. Del Rey hasn't yet.

I can see why forcing people on both sides of the red pen to go electronic would be a bad idea - but so many of my rightpondian writer friends moan about having to deal with this, and I would not want to accept a mss from the US because I'd be scared of the delivery going wrong. (I've sent letters that I could have walked to their destination, I'd _only_ have taken a week to deliver it.)

The nerve-wracking thing is this is definitely the CE's original manuscript. I hope they've got a photocopy themselves, just in case.

This is of course also why I'm about to spend the entire fricking day typing my changes in to a file, so I have a copy of my own in case something gets lost.

*goes to do that*
