Full icon tutorial

First of all I want to apologize to the people that are still waiting for me to cap something and the other people that recently made a request. I haven't forgotten about it, but I've been so busy that I hardly did anything. This also goes for the interest icons. They will be coming, it's just taking me a little more time that I thought!

mscreations asked me to do a tutorial for this icon. I made this a while ago, so I had to re-create it and it feels weird writing a tutorial on this icon, as I made it some time ago. But I do like how the coloring turned out on it, so I thought I'd share that!

* Please note that the request for making a tutorial was for this icon, which is only slightly different from the one I re-created. The colors in the newer one are a little brighter.

- So I started with this cap, which I capped myself. (btw: I always resize in Paintshop Pro, because for some reason that works better, but then I make the icon itself in Photoshop.) I resized the cap to my liking and cropped it till I got this:

- I duplicated that layer. Next I sharpened it once and set the layer to screen.

- I duplicated the screened layer, then desaturated it and set it to soft light. I then ended up with this:

- I used to work with the following gradient by crumblingwalls a lot. I used it here too. I added this gradient in between the screened layer and the soft light layer and set it to pin light. Because it looked to overwhelming at 100 %, I played with until I liked it and that was at 13 %:

- Because Emma's (the baby) face was really light, I searched for the right gradient to make her face a little darker and Rachel's one not much darker and I ended up using the following one by detoxcocktails. I pasted it after the pin light layer and set it to hard light, because that gives off such a pretty glow. I played with the opacity till I liked it, which ended up being 68 %:

.

- The result that I got was this:

- I really liked the glowy coloring, so I decided to not mess with it any more by adding more gradients and layers. So I just added some tiny text, Copperlate Gothic Light, 1px, set to strong, and ended up with this result:

- I hope that this was clear enough. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask!
