Franklin knows Fields is staring at him.

Furthermore, girls are (as a rule) never interested in him romantically, which means she thinks he's either insane or interesting. As he makes a point not to be interesting, she must think he's insane.

...And what is up with her music? Tripped out. She's probably high.

All these things are what make Franklin stare back at her with a mildly affronted look.

"Well, you'd be wrong."

"And how so?"

"It--doesn't matter that I didn't want company in the first place--because--you shouldn't invade people's tables willy-nilly."

His voice stutters and stops because he's unsure of himself, and his face takes odd shapes at times. He's an expressive (and stunted) speaker.

"I assure you it wasn't willy-nilly," she says happily.

"It was quite meditated, actually."

There is a moment of sputtering, then: "That's even worse!"

"Not if I'm discounting 'extraordinary etiquette' entirely."

This statement is punctuated by air quotes.

"Oh, that doesn't even make sense."

Sulking is a go!

"It makes plenty of sense," is her terse reply, and she proceeds to order a bear claw from a nearby waitrat.

"Doesn't," he mutters, and hunches over his tomato sandwich.

So there.

Odds are he can't actually hear her chewing at all, but, you know, passive aggressiveness is in this season. Or something.
