The Master; Doctor Who; A pub

Apr 05, 2008 14:49

There's a handsome chap, in a sharp black suit, sitting by himself, with half a glass of something clear at his table.

Tap-tap-tap-tap go his fingers. Tap-tap-tap-tap.

"Would you like anything, sir?" asked the young man at the end of the table. Bright green eyes peer curiously at his fingers as they tap out the beat.

Tap-tap-tap-tap.

"No," he replies vaguely, his eyes fixed on a non-existent point.

He blinked and then tipped his head to the side, something about the man...

"Well, all right. If you want anything, I'm right over there by the bar. Just raise your hand."

And, after a thought, he put down a pair of caramels before starting to walk off.

The Master's eyes flick up at the boy.

"Have we met before?"

Tap-tap-tap-tap.

There's a woman at a table not too far away, dressed rather retro-ly all things considered.

The tapping is starting to get to her. So much so that:

"Waiting for someone, are you?"

Tap-tap-tap-tap.

His eyes are focused on a nonexistent point, but they flick up, and distinctly sharpen when she speaks; his fingers still, and he smiles.

"After a fashion, you could say that."

"You certainly seem impatient enough," Sarah replies, picking up her tea cup and moving over to his table.

Invitation? Someday she'll understand the meaning of that.

"Do you come here often then?"

"Oh, from time to time," he replies airily.

Luckily for her, he doesn't object to her joining him.

Not in the slightest.

Really.

Tap-tap-tap-tap.

The pub is a bit full, more than he expected; mind, he should know better than to pay attention to expectations.

He looks around for an empty spot before he's drawn to a certain table - something he also ought to ignore, but life is much less interesting that way.

"Is this seat taken?"

Well hello, what have we here?

His fingers still.

"No. By all means," he says, gesturing at an empty chair.

Unexpected? Yes.

Unwelcome?

...Well...

He smiled, sliding into the chair. There was something familiar, something foreboding, about this man. He couldn't quite put his finger on it. So, obviously, the best course of action was talking with him until he figured it out.

"Thank you. Do you come here often?"

The smile he gets in return is bright, and cheery, and everything that the smile of a good, decent, upbeat bloke should be.

"Oh, from time to time, that's all," he says.

There's a steely cold gaze from the secret agent who looks like a superhero slash idiot in the corner. The door has not returned, that alone is cause enough for alarm.

Not to mention that guy And the tapping.

Tap-tap-tap-tap.

He's being ignored, or perhaps not even noticed in the first place.

Or maybe the Master just keeps tapping to spite him.

None of this is true.

Tap-tap-tap-tap.

And then there's a young lady, blonde, tapping her nails in unison with his.

On his table.

"My taps click. Yours don't."

His eyes snap to her fingers, and then her eyes.

"They don't need to."

"Sounds nicer, though."

The noise she's making is more of a tick-tick-tick.

"Sharper."

Tap-tap-tap-tap. Tap-tap-tap-tap.

"I think you miss the point, young lady."

His fingers still.

"But that's quite all right."
