"Why do people pinch their nose?" Fry asks, appearing next to Charles.

Charles looks up from his drink and says,

"I don't think I know the answer to that."

"The change in vasculature seems unlikely to contribute to reduction of stress." Fry says.

He deposits some schoolwork on the bar, covering up an assignment with an 'F' on the top.

"Yes, there's a feeling of relieving pressure which is helpful. Are you working on anything interesting at school?"

"You look like someone a bovine trampled on," Jono says conversationally to Charles as he stops up at the bar.

His own personal shields are up and he's not trying to get into Charles' mind either. He's being polite. :O

Charles isn't skimming anyone's mind at the moment because he's tired and he hasn't been here,

"I had a long day."

Jono thinks about this for a moment. "Those happen."

"Yes, they do and was enjoying some moments of extra time here."

At the same time, not everyone in Milliways knows how to guard their thoughts - or even that there would be reason to.
A heady mix of elation and dread - or at least anticipation - might lead Charles' attention to a girl in the rafters. She's maybe eighteen, wearing all black, and very much keeping an eye out for someone (that's where the anticipation comes in).

She is being quite loud and Charles isn't even listening so he looks up to her and smiles,

"Waiting for someone?"

The comment startles her - but fortunately (for him), she doesn't connect the question to her thought process so much as to her stance. And the fact that she happens to be facing the door.
"I suppose you could say that," she says. Really, if her mother's here, she almost feels that they might as well talk and get it over with. Even though she doesn't really want to, in a way.

"How would you say it?"

It's odd to look at her up in the rafters but it reminds him of something he could see Raven doing so leans on the counter.

"An academic," Kit notes passing by. He's still incredibly new to Milliways, and Charles comes off as fairly amenable - if also distracted.

"I'm sorry to interrupt."

It takes him a moment to realize the phrase is directed at him as one of the notes on his thesis is unhelpful,

"Yes, at Oxford and no, it's fine. I feel like if I can get enough done then I can ignore it for a while."

"I've attended several lectures at Oxford but I never had the chance to study there."

The notes and topics across the man's table is beyond Kit's experience, but it is the novelty of finding another student here in his adulthood that makes Kit take notice.

"A dissertation?"

"Yes, my work is on mutation in genetics and the larger ideas around it such as adaptation. How long does it take for a mutation to be accepted as the norm? It's still a new field,"

For Charles it's one that's quite close to his heart.

Clementine is drawn to Charles by the sight of his booze. Sorry about that.

"That smells delicious," she declares, pulling up a chair.

He raises an eyebrow but waves to the chair she's sitting in as he closes his notes, "I like good Scotch."

"So does my guy," she declares. "Smells like a good vintage." She leans back and takes a look at him. "You have a nice aura, that's what drew me to you."

"You can see my aura?"

He's never heard of anyone being able to that as most of the time when people say that they're not saying anything real. After all he can observes minds but auras are something else.
