Meetings in the Shire sound a lot more entertaining. Councils need more food. ;)

Ah, and Saruman is making his first move. Interesting and how lovely that Thorin will think of the doubt in Gandalf's voice and recognize the contrast.

Ah and the twins and all those little hints about the "heir". ;) All of these things coming together will be interesting!

They do! Now I'm imagining Bilbo bringing a huge plate of cookies or a pie to the meeting and making sure everyone has at least a little... :)

Thorin growls a lot about Gandalf, but when push comes to shove I think he intuits that uncertainty is better than certainty when it comes to planning the fate of the Ring. (He doesn't really like to admit it, though!)

I'm rushing out the door, but had to pause to read the new chapter! It's all great, but I particularly smiled at this:

He felt suddenly an almost-overwhelming desire to be with Bilbo again, to hear his voice and see his smile, to know there was a space in the world free of ancient grudges, of doubt and suspicion.

Yay, I'm so glad! Thorin and Bilbo being each other's "safe space" makes me very happy. :)

You know, I'd rather have a meeting in the Shire. Food makes meetings feel less tedious. ;) Oh, Bilbo, taking comfort and courage from a simple touch of Thorin's hand. *flails* BABBIES! The animosity between Denethor and Theoden helps explain what we saw in Lord of the Rings: why Theoden was so reluctant to help Gondor and why Denethor was so reluctant to even ask for help, especially from Rohan.

I kind of like the idea that the ring hates Thorin. Probably because Thorin gave it up? Or because he's dwarf? Who knows? and Saruman attempting to use his silver tongue on Thorin. *snort* Should've known he would. *flails moar* Bilbo and a spot of tea before the Council began once more were just what he needed. ILU Thorin! Perfect!

I admit I've really wondered about their relationship! They're both rulers, they must know each other...I can't really see them getting along (um, unless some hard journey/quest were to bring them a sense of camaraderie...). So I can't help but think they've had a rough relationship and Theoden coming to his aid is rather hard for him!

I figure the number of people who've ever held the Ring and given it up is pretty low (none in this universe!), and the Ring doesn't take rejection well... :)

an ornately-carved ivory horn slung at his side

Oooh! Denethor with the horn of Gondor!

“Portents, you say?” Denethor went on, although no one had interrupted him.

But hee, Denethor! *pets him*

Saruman seemed to keep looking to where Bilbo was sitting. Bilbo tried to unobtrusively push his chair further behind Thorin’s, but discovered it was too heavy to move easily. He certainly didn’t want to call attention to himself by straining to shove a stone chair into the shadows, so he sat still and tried not to fidget under the weight of that heavy-lidded gaze.

Meeep! Poor Bilbo...

Meetings in the Shire had a good deal fewer speeches and a good deal more food. Perhaps everyone here had more stamina than Bilbo.

But his stomach was threatening to growl, and the Ring was unpleasantly heavy in his pocket.

Oh and Bilbo. Bilbo. This is why I love you so!

The two men glared at each other across the council-table.

Hee! Heehee...

Théoden glared at Denethor again. “Why did you of all people have the same dream I had?”Oh dear, those two ( ... )

Oooh! Denethor with the horn of Gondor!

Would you believe I almost forgot to mention it? I suddenly realized it's absolutely essential later and I had to rush to make sure to mention it!

But hee, Denethor! *pets him*

Denethor as very full of himself and terribly formal is just...so much fun, oh dear.

,i>Eeee, Balin! Also, it's so interesting to see the Council without Elrond...

It is! To be honest, it's very hard to keep everyone in line without someone like him in the room! Even Thorin, who's become more diplomatic, isn't quite up to it...

I am also SO relieved that Thorin has borne the Ring himself, and knows just what it can do to people, though it was really painful at the time...

Having the Ringbearer have someone who remembers how awful it was and knows what it can do to you is such a comfort, and...probably will be more so, by the end.

This Council is proving to be very interesting indeed, with so many who weren't there at all in the Council of Elrond - and Saruman, eeeep! I know, it's so fun to have so many of ( ... )
