Title: Clarity of Purpose, Chap. 8

Relationship: Thorin/Bilbo
Characters: Bilbo Baggins

Oooh! Denethor with the horn of Gondor!
“Portents, you say?” Denethor went on, although no one had interrupted him.
But hee, Denethor! *pets him*
Saruman seemed to keep looking to where Bilbo was sitting. Bilbo tried to unobtrusively push his chair further behind Thorin’s, but discovered it was too heavy to move easily. He certainly didn’t want to call attention to himself by straining to shove a stone chair into the shadows, so he sat still and tried not to fidget under the weight of that heavy-lidded gaze.
Meeep! Poor Bilbo...
Meetings in the Shire had a good deal fewer speeches and a good deal more food. Perhaps everyone here had more stamina than Bilbo.
But his stomach was threatening to growl, and the Ring was unpleasantly heavy in his pocket.
Oh and Bilbo. Bilbo. This is why I love you so!
The two men glared at each other across the council-table.
Hee! Heehee...
Théoden glared at Denethor again. “Why did you of all people have the same dream I had?”
Oh dear, those two... They really don't get along, do they?
Besides Bilbo he was the smallest person in the room, but his voice held all the command of a king
Eeee, Balin! Also, it's so interesting to see the Council without Elrond...
as he passed Thorin’s chair to walk into the center of the room he felt Thorin’s hand touch his shoulder. A fleeting touch, but it seemed enough courage flowed into him from the contact that he was able to make it to the center of the room and the table that waited there.
*squees quietly*
He should have been grateful that the attention had moved from him, but he didn’t; he felt sick and anguished, wanting nothing more than to snatch the ring up and flee the room with it. So many people, so many eyes!
Eeeeek, Bilbo!
“Alas!” cried Glorfindel, rising from his seat. “I know the next part of this tale well, for Elrond has told it to me: how he urged Isildur to destroy the Ring, but Isildur said him nay and kept it for his own. Yet it betrayed him, and slipped from his hand as he fled from the orc-hordes that pursued him, and he was slain, and the Ring lost.”
Eeee, Glorfindel!
For a brief instant, it was as if he saw the inhabitants of the room stripped of form, as spirits only: Saruman glimmered with a thousand points of color; Gandalf was an immaculate silver light; Glorfindel and Galadriel were both a nearly-unbearable glory of gold. All of them throbbing with power, all of them dangerous
Oh, oh! That's so pretty, but so worrying too... Bilbo! *hugs him*
But this:
the glimpse he had caught of Thorin before releasing the Ring still lingered in his vision: a rock-solid presence, warm as a banked fire or a sun-soaked stone, immovable and reliable.
and this:
the Ring might fear and yearn for the great powers at the Council, but it loathed Thorin Oakenshield with a dull, unceasing hatred.
Oh, I am SO glad they have each other!
And welcome to the foul thing, Thorin thought.
I am also SO relieved that Thorin has borne the Ring himself, and knows just what it can do to people, though it was really painful at the time...
Yes, he thought, quickening his steps toward his own quarters, Bilbo and a spot of tea before the Council began once more were just what he needed.
*hearts Thorin*
This Council is proving to be very interesting indeed, with so many who weren't there at all in the Council of Elrond - and Saruman, eeeep!
I'm looking forward to more! :)

Would you believe I almost forgot to mention it? I suddenly realized it's absolutely essential later and I had to rush to make sure to mention it!

Denethor as very full of himself and terribly formal is just...so much fun, oh dear.
,i>Eeee, Balin! Also, it's so interesting to see the Council without Elrond...
It is! To be honest, it's very hard to keep everyone in line without someone like him in the room! Even Thorin, who's become more diplomatic, isn't quite up to it...
I am also SO relieved that Thorin has borne the Ring himself, and knows just what it can do to people, though it was really painful at the time...
Having the Ringbearer have someone who remembers how awful it was and knows what it can do to you is such a comfort, and...probably will be more so, by the end.

I know, it's so fun to have so many of the same issues coming out, but people respond to them differently because of who they are. Dwalin is about to really put his foot in it, for example! :)
I'm really looking forward to posting more, yay! Thank you for your wonderful, wonderful comments!
