Pirates 3: At World's End

May 25, 2007 09:14

I was going to say it surprised me that Pirates 3 only scored a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, but honestly I think that's more accurate. Critics have polarized in their entertainment these days, so a lot of things (at least what I see) seem to fall in the 'love or hate' category ( Read more... )

Film has always had certain limits, but recently a lot of those limits are changing into new limits, nevermind the medium is evolving. It just bothers me when you take an ambitious and imaginative film like this and then compare it to something like 'Munich' or 'The Departed.' They are meant to be enjoyed for different reasons, and I think critics just forget that sometimes. In film reviews they occasionally let slip things like 'trapped in the theater' (which was in the Time.com review of Pirates 3) that indicate to me that films have become part of their 'job,' and thus aren't fun. If you live in a world of escapism no wonder it gets boring, especially if that's not your thing in the first place. They don't always get the option to say 'No thanks, not my thing ( ... )

Argh, a pox upon ye, livejournal! I'm not getting comment notifications.

I want to see it now because you've actually made it sound pretty interesting and I should at least see what the fuss is all about after all this time!

Indeed, this is the first one I received in my inbox today, all the others I've had to go in search of.

Yay! I think Rush and Depp's performance alone are worth it! It continually surprises me when I see 'Disney' in conjunction with the title, since there are so many dead bodies and knife fights and such. And Sparrow has an open wound on his face which might be the result of tertiary Syphilis!

I thought the second one was a bit disappointing. It just felt like there was something missing, and I think it was the sense of fun and adventure that the first one had. It was a bit heavier, and I think its sense of gravity weighed it down at times, and that sense of gloom and despair made the meandering plot a little harder to get through than the fun meandering of the first film.

They wanted the tone to be despair and it was overplayed. Yes, we get that Will's father is a crewman on the Flying Dutchman and it really, really sucks. There were a few too many scenes where it was ham-handedly presented to us that 'Whoa, eternity aboard that shitty boat with a miserable squid yelling at you all the time equals forever. Heavy.'

Also, and this is dumb but I felt like it's the kind of detail that would have been addressed in the first movie: what happened to Will when he was aboard the Dutchman and it submerged? He wasn't dead! He needed air!I guess it was just one of those situations where you say 'Oh, it was just cursed pirate boat ( ... )

I felt so-so about the second one too, but this one definitely redeemed the second one for me. I mean I enjoyed Dead Man's Chest a bit, but this one was a definitely upswing from the last.

I dug it in a huge way. And it had Ms. Ching, the Chinese Pirate queen! RAWK!

I can't read your review because I love the Pirates franchise and I can't wait to see the movie. I don't know when I'll get the chance though.

At the first chance you get you should totally go. It was so much fun!

There were so many great scenes and ideas. . . I just can't talk about it. I want to see it again right now.

I thought owning Jack's mum's head as a trinket was pretty dark. :D

And he seethed. He oozed. He throbbed with danger. Jagger just flails and sweats.

I don't know, ever since I saw a caricaturist painting of Richards where he looked like a demonic chimp (it actually frightened me) he's put me on edge. Not in a 'he's dangerously sexy' way but in a 'might follow me to my car and stab me in the back of the neck' kind of way.
