Veins

One would think that when visiting one of the best zoos in the world, one would look at the animals rather than the trees, but no, not me; I emerged from my visit to Singapore Zoo with more pictures of plants and trees than of animals. One of my lucky finds was this pretty decomposing leaf lying on top of a much bigger leaf. The bright afternoon ( Read more... )

singapore, leaves, nature, trees

the loss in sharpness/focus is more than made up by the contrast it shows between life and death.

Thank you! If only my technique were half as good...

Good to have you back, Minnie. I've missed your lovely posts, thoughtful comments and delightfully apt eye for appropriate icons. :-)

Thanks! One of those little finds that make me happy even when my camera isn't quite co-operating...

these are very nice, i think i like the top one best, with the little leaf askew; in death he no longer had to stand at attention.

and possibly something interesting here too...perhaps the first misstep in language i have seen you make in, like, forever. did you mean "veins" where you said "nerves"? or perhaps you meant exactly what you said. in any case, they're nice photos and it was clever of you to have appreciated the possibilities in shooting from below. not everyone thinks of the more difficult angle.

Thanks! In retrospect I think I should have shot them from a slightly different angle. As they are now, the compositions seem a bit rigid, especially when seen together. But I still like them...

I was under the impression that nerves and veins were the same thing in botany, but a quick Google search indicates that this is not in fact the case and that "veins" is a more common term for what the pictures depict. I've changed the subject line accordingly. Thanks for the correction! :-)

they're nice pictures in any case.

the distinction between nerves and veins is a little iffy nowadays. veins are vascular structures for movement of fluids carrying nutrients; nerves transmit electro-chemical impulses. since there are a growing numbers of people who believe plants have "feelings" it's easy to become embroiled in an argument you didn't want.

it occurred to me that you might be of the "feeling" persuasion and said exactly what you intended. your english is so much better than mine, i would hesitate to ever correct you. obviously i do have too much time on my hands.

Nah, I'm simply very ignorant on the subject of botany, as I realised a few years ago when I fell madly in love with a botanist and found myself corrected on the most embarrassingly basic botanic stuff. I'm going to do something about that ignorance at some point, but I have so many other things on my mind at the moment...

Of course my English isn't better than yours. Don't be silly. I may speak the language well, but I'm not a native speaker, nor will I ever be. You have no idea how that frustrates me sometimes. :-)

This is a really interesting photograph...it reminds me of an x-ray showing ribs and some sort of foreign object!
