Chapter 4

“Kyuhyun-ah” Sungmin whispered one night. Kyuhyun had feel asleep - probably very tired after the long bike ride around the mansion. Sungmin was now able to talk, and the doctor said Sungmin wouldn’t have a problem adjusting if things stayed the same. And so, their father had bought identical bicycles to celebrate - though later on, Sungmin had tied a ribbon on his bicycle making the bicycle different from one another. Sungmin really didn’t want to wake Kyuhyun - it was rare for Kyuhyun to sleep first before Sungmin - but there was something that itched his curiosity.

Sungmin knew something was bothering Kyuhyun. Sungmin had seen that face the day he had step in the door, during dinner. Today, he saw it again when his father had hugged Sungmin before leaving. It was a face of defeat, and Sungmin hated seeing it on Kyuhyun’s face. It made him want to pick up crayons and re-draw his brother’s face.

Sungmin slowly lifted Kyuhyun’s arm away from his body and crawled off the bed. He was going to find the midnight fairy and tell the fairy to make sure Kyuhyun would never make that face again.

So Sungmin walked out of Kyuhyun’s room and walked down the hallway, thinking of places the midnight fairy would usually hide in. The mansion was huge, so it may take awhile. Just as Sungmin walked to the other end of the hallway, Sungmin noticed that there was light from one room. The midnight fairy must be in there.

Sungmin had never been to this side of the mansion. So, he didn’t know it was his father’s study and didn’t think of the possibility that, that night, his father was sitting on his desk, thinking of how Sungmin had recovered so well in such a short time while sipping black coffee.

“Appa?” Sungmin’s voice was barely as loud as a whisper. His father smiled at that son of his. “What are you doing up this late, Sungmin?” Sungmin walked towards his father and the latter picked him up off the floor, letting him sit on his lap.

“I was looking for the midnight fairy” Sungmin said making his father speechless in whether he should laugh and tell the boy there was no midnight fairy or play along. He had no experience with myths and children. Kyuhyun had never asked him such things.

“Why were you looking for fairies?” finding that, that was only thing he could come up with in reply. Though, he was a little cautious as he asked because he thought probably it was better these myths let on for a little longer and he didn’t really want to break the boy’s heart. Sungmin is fragile.

“Kyuhyun has been making these sad faces and I thought the midnight fairy might help. I don’t know how to make Kyuhyun happy, the way he would make me happy when I’m upset. Do you know where the midnight fairy is?”

And for the second time that night, the successful millionaire who was respected by all other business man was brought to a state of no words - how it happened, was beyond him. He had never noticed Kyuhyun being sad; though he had spent the past decade of his life watching the boy grow gradually, visiting the boy every month - his father had known Kyuhyun since the boy was born and had never noticed the boy’s emotions. He always seemed so heartless.

“But why would Kyuhyun be sad when I bought bicycles? He seemed perfectly fine while he was playing the bicycles.” He defended himself - though there was no offense made. But the thing was his father might have not noticed but Sungmin had always noticed it. Even, though Sungmin only knew him for a month.

“But, Appa, you weren’t around. How could you notice?” Sungmin batted his innocent big eyes and jumped off. His father didn’t know if he should feel insulted by his own child but he could see the truth in Sungmin’s words. He was never there for Kyuhyun because he always thought Kyuhyun was doing fine and had everything he ever needed. Sungmin on the other hand had just lost his mother and suffered trauma. He had nothing.

“Good night, Appa. I’m going to look for the midnight fairy and wish for Kyuhyun’s happiness” Sungmin chirped.

“Wait, Sungmin, its late, go straight to bed”

“But, Appa, Kyuhyun would be sad forever if I don’t find the fairy. I don’t want him sad. I want to help him.”

Was Kyuhyun really that sad?

“Go straight to bed. I’ll look for it, ok?” Sungmin nodded in reply. “Ok then. If I stay too long, Kyuhyun might look for me anyway” Sungmin then skipped away leaving his father in deep thought. The nanny and all the people in the house had told him of every detail his son was doing as he grew. He knew that Kyuhyun liked MegaBots and read comic books. He knew Kyuhyun spent most of his weekends reading in the library - that’s why he was constantly buying books for the boy. He knew Kyuhyun was an excellent student even though he was skipping classes lately to follow Sungmin around.

He knew his son.

Of course, he did. He was always there, but from far…

And he gave Kyuhyun everything.

Even if it was his fault for letting his mother leave, he had made up for it, hadn’t he?

But of course, maybe he should have done better. What kind of father would only see his child once a month?

You stupid, stupid man…

Their father sat at his desk and stared at the spot Sungmin was standing before he left. “If I stay too long, Kyuhyun might look for me anyway…”

He crinkled his forehead thinking of that confusing line his little son had just uttered to him. Did he hear it right?

There was only one way to find out. He stepped out of his study and walked towards Sungmin’s room. He could see his own reflection in the shiny, squeaky floor as he was walking. It seemed like his reflection was mocking him.

His father is a little bewildered when he turns to the left and finds that Sungmin’s room was empty. Did the boy continue looking for the fairy?

“You stupid man, you don’t even know where your son is” his shadows mocked him.

How could such a normal night make him so confused?

He was about to leave but then he noticed Kyuhyun’s room door was ajar. Did Kyuhyun really come out to look for Sungmin?

He was about to peek in but he could hear voices from within and froze.

“Sungmin-ah, you didn’t close the door”

“Just in case the midnight fairy decides to come over I want to keep the door open.” He could hear Kyuhyun laughing slightly.

“Scoot over, Kyuhyun. I won’t fit”

“You’re lying this bed is big enough for more than just the two of us”

He held in his laughter. It was adorably childish.

Maybe, I shouldn’t disturb them.

“Sungmin, how old are you?” Kyuhyun suddenly asked one day as they were lying in the grass. Spring was coming to an end and it wasn’t exactly that hot anymore.

“I’m eight years old” Sungmin said rolling over, closer to Kyuhyun, landing on his tummy.

“That means you’re the same age as me?” Kyuhyun was a little taken aback. Sungmin was smaller than him, and Kyuhyun always thought he was the hyung - the hyung out to protect his impossibly adorable dongsaeng. How could Sungmin be the same age?

“Ok then,” Kyuhyun started. “When is your birthday?”

“New Year; January 1st.”

He’s older? Woah…

“When’s yours?” Sungmin was pulling grass thread by thread before he stared intently at Kyuhyun.

“3rd February,” Kyuhyun mumbled. He’s only a dongsaeng by one month right? Doesn’t mean anything right?

“Really?” Sungmin said laughing gleefully. “I’m the hyung?”

“What are you so happy about huh?” Kyuhyun glared at Sungmin. “I’m going to get you for that!” Kyuhyun then started tickling his ‘hyung’ by the ribs causing Sungmin to laugh hysterically.

“YAH!” Sungmin shouted between laughing. “I’m the hyung! You can’t do this to me”

“Says who?” Kyuhyun bellowed.

“Young master” Kyuhyun turned to find the nanny staring at them with an exceptionally happy smile. This old woman is so happy these days.

“Your father said he’d like to bring you and young master Sungmin to the fun fair this evening” Kyuhyun stared at his nanny with an expression of disbelief. Was this nanny lying or was his father really sparing time for him and Sungmin?

“Kyuhyun-ah, did you hear that? We’re going to the fun fair!” Sungmin squealed in his excitement.

Wow, this man cares about Sungmin that much, huh?  Kyuhyun watched Sungmin jump up and down. Oh, well, at least his bringing me along…

***~~~***

Kyuhyun laid his head on his bed. Kyuhyun was supposed to sleep in Sungmin’s bed tonight, but he was a too confused to even to walk over to the next room.

His father was acting all weird today. He asked Kyuhyun which ride should they ride first - it was the first time his father had actually asked Kyuhyun a question, let alone hear the boy’s opinion. When Sungmin pulled his father asking for cotton candy, the man had asked Kyuhyun what color he had wanted. That was totally out of behavior.

During the time, Sungmin was around; his father had never paid attention to him. He had only paid attention to Sungmin. But why was he paying attention to him now?

“Kyuhyun-ah” Kyuhyun was a little surprised to find his father standing by the door.

“Appa” his father had entered the room and sat by the edge of the bed.

“It seems like the first time I’ve entered this room” his father admitted, he then smiled at Kyuhyun.

Was this guy becoming crazy?

“Sungmin told me a few nights ago that he wanted to look for the midnight fairy to make you happy. He told me you were sad” his father said slowly.

“And now, you’re crying” Kyuhyun felt a little odd. He wasn’t crying. His father extended his hand and wiped the tear that Kyuhyun hadn’t realize had fell from his eyes with his thumb. He suddenly realized that his cheeks were wet. I was crying…

“What’s the matter?” Kyuhyun stared at his father. This man had never even glance at him over his monthly dinner for the past 8 years, and here he was asking Kyuhyun why he was crying.

“Look,” his father started, looking at the floor for awhile before staring straight at his son’s face. Kyuhyun could feel something he had never felt around his father; his father had showed emotion. And Kyuhyun was able to feel it. “I’m sorry”

“I’m sorry for all the times I looked beyond you, I’m sorry that I let your mother leave us, and I’m sorry for being a horrible father,” Kyuhyun watched his father come to almost tears and he quickly shakes his head with disagreement. “Appa…” he cried.

His father extended a hand and hugged Kyuhyun. “I’m truly sorry”

When Kyuhyun stopped crying, his father tucked him in for the first time. Of course, Kyuhyun was beyond happiness. A few minutes after his father closes the door behind him, Kyuhyun immediately realizes something was missing. Sungmin isn’t here.

And before Kyuhyun could jump out of his bed, the door slowly creaks open revealing a peeking Sungmin. “I thought you fell asleep without me” Sungmin said looking at Kyuhyun sitting on his bed.

“How could I?” Kyuhyun chuckled. “Come here faster. I’m tired and want to sleep” Kyuhyun patted the side of Kyuhyun’s bed that Sungmin had always slept in and Sungmin quickly found his way in the dark. And for awhile, they lay side by side, simply drifting to sleep in the silence.

“What took you so long to get here?” Kyuhyun whispers. “I was waiting for you to come here, instead of me going to your room”

“I was out looking for the midnight fairy” Sungmin replied. Kyuhyun stared at Sungmin for awhile. Are you really doing this so that I become happy?

“Kyuhyun, are you going to call me hyung?” Sungmin suddenly coos.

“No way” Kyuhyun said quickly though in some way, Sungmin was the hyung. He was looking out for Kyuhyun. You told Appa that I was unhappy.

Sungmin sighed audibly. He knew it was coming; though it would have been nice if Kyuhyun called him hyung.

Kyuhyun pulled Sungmin into his small embrace. “Thank you, Sungmin” Sungmin is a little puzzled. Why was Kyuhyun thanking him? He never found the midnight fairy.

Then, Sungmin realized that Kyuhyun’s eyes were slightly red and puffy.

“Kyuhyun-ah, were you crying?” I should have looked for the midnight fairy!

“I was but you’re here. So I’m not anymore”

***~~~***

Kyuhyun buttoned his shirt, and found his socks by the bed. Sungmin had always put it there for him. Dammit, where the hell is my bag?

He rummaged his cabinet then looked under his bed then moved to look under Sungmin’s bed. “Sungmin!” he shouted. “Where’s my bag?”

“Your bag is down here with me! Just hurry up and bring your tie! We’re going to be late!” Sungmin screamed from downstairs. Ish, you should have told me before you took my bag!
