Chapter 2

“Isn’t he the son of that first love?”

“Then why is he here?”

“His mother died in a car crash”

“The first love died?”

“I think there’s something wrong with that Sungmin boy…”

“YEAH! He doesn’t say anything at all”

“Is it because he can’t hear us?”

Kyuhyun grinded his teeth together. Somehow listening to this servants talk about his half-brother was getting to him. And this was no good. Kyuhyun never gave a damn about what these people said.

“The weird thing was this morning I saw the young master come out of the boy’s room”

Kyuhyun turned his head to the voice; his glare of death ready to kill the owner of the voice. This stupid lady shouldn’t be talking so pompously in the hallways where everyone can hear you! Does she even know who she is?

“Ah…! Young master” she cowered away under the 8 year old glare. “The dining room is that way” she mumbled before scattering away with her equally scared friend.

Now, that would teach you.

But, come to think of it, there was truth in their words; Sungmin hadn’t said a word since he came here. There was no respond from him; not even a nod. But it was impossible that Sungmin couldn’t hear him. I sang to you. It’s impossible you can’t hear.

So Kyuhyun continued to the dining room. He had woke up that morning with little Sungmin in his arms and a strangely warm feeling. Like when he woke up some days and his mother was sleeping in his room instead of her own. It was the exact same feeling. And Kyuhyun wasn’t going to deny it; he completely loved it.  What feeling is this feeling?

During breakfast Kyuhyun sits in front of Sungmin - the boy had red eyes from crying so much - and thrown Sungmin a small smile. His father continued to question Sungmin and somehow Kyuhyun didn’t feel so mad anymore. Sungmin only looked at his father at the end of every question and his father would assume his own answer. Sungmin didn’t say a word and his father was talking to himself. What is that old man doing?

Why are you not speaking?

Kyuhyun keeps a steady stare on Sungmin just because he was curious, how could this boy not be able to hear?

There was nothing that could stop Kyuhyun’s curiosity. Once he was intrigued he had to find out. Otherwise it would keep him awake at night. And so while Sungmin was sent to follow one of his dad’s servants to buy clothes, Kyuhyun went to the library. There was a fair amount of diseases and symptoms he had once read when he was 7. But as Kyuhyun went through all the books he read, it didn’t get him to a conclusion - all the books were meant for teenagers. There weren’t advanced stuff that he needed.

“Ahjusshi” Kyuhyun called to the man who kept the books in order - 5000 books needed someone to take care of them. “I’m looking for a reason why people don’t talk”

“Why, young master, some people are dumb in this world” the old man says. “They aren’t able to talk but are able to hear us”

“You mean like blind people. But only they cannot speak?” Kyuhyun was open to this possibility. How could he not know this?

“Yes”

“But why is that so?”

“Some people are born with it. Some get into an accident and destroy the ability. God works in mysterious ways and there is a good to it that we would never know” the old man then continues to the books that Kyuhyun had read and starts arranging them. So you cannot talk?

~~~***~~~~~~***~~~
When his nanny tucked Kyuhyun in for bed, the matter still swirled around his brain. Was Sungmin mute?
The nanny sat by Kyuhyun’s bed for a while and smiled down at Kyuhyun. The nanny was always Kyuhyun’s favorite person in the house. She took care of him when his mother left; soothed him exactly like his mother would when he had nightmares. There was no one else in this mansion that he would trust more than this old lady that has been taking care of him since he was only 2 years old.
“Is there something bothering you, young master?” she cooed.
“Nanny, is Sungmin mute?” Kyuhyun couldn’t hold in his curiosity. It would kill his insides.
“In fact, your father is looking into the matter” she said calmly. So that guy did notice… “Sungmin used to be able to speak”
“That means he wasn’t born mute?”
“That’s why your father is sending Sungmin to a special school for him to be able to speak again”
“Is that possible?” Kyuhyun thinks this was too much for his small brain. Could one not be mute during birth and suddenly become birth and actually be cured? Did this world have the ability?
“With a miracle it would, darling. Now, rest your head. You have school tomorrow” Yeah, I am kind of tired.
Kyuhyun immediately fell asleep the moment his nanny closed the lights. He was probably tired from all the advance thinking.
But even though he was that tired, Kyuhyun still woke up in the middle of the night. Well, it was kind of hard to sleep when Kyuhyun heard a very familiar sound of sobbing. Sungmin was crying again.
And as fast as his small feet could bring him, Kyuhyun was already by Sungmin’s side; singing the same song; falling in the same manner and waking up in the same manner.
Sungmin-ah, I’m here. Don’t cry.
~~~***~~~~~~***~~~

“Kyuhyun” his teacher said waking Kyuhyun from his deep thinking of Sungmin the next morning. He simply couldn’t get Sungmin out of his brain. The way the boy only ever looked at him every time Kyuhyun said something - his eyes wide and teary almost as if he was about to cry - and Sungmin never said anything in reply. He used to be able to talk.

“Kyuhyun, concentrate on the math’s equation” his teacher said. His teacher must have been just as puzzled as Kyuhyun was; but of course about different matters. Kyuhyun had never been distracted in class. “No daydreaming, Kyuhyun!”

“I wouldn’t call it daydreaming, sir” Kyuhyun replied biting the end of his pencil. “It’s called deep thinking. Intelligent people do it all the time”

Of course, the old man laughs at Kyuhyun’s words. He underestimated the brilliant Kyuhyun.

“Now, sir, tell me why some people that am not mute become mute? And how is it possible for them to revive their ability to speak?” Kyuhyun swung his pencil around to each word like a glorious wand as he spoke to express his question with the right emotions; as though he was telling a story.

His teacher is slightly dumbfounded by this question. He knew Kyuhyun was a genius in the making; the boy knew too much things that an average boy of his age wouldn’t know; but having this question asked him so suddenly has him speechless. He might be considering that Kyuhyun might not be a genius in the making but instead, already a genius.

“Boy. That stuff isn’t for people of your age to understand”

Kyuhyun glared at this old man. How could this man whose job is to share knowledge deny him answers?

“But since you insist…” his teacher clearly is also afraid of the brilliant Kyuhyun’s death glare. “People can become mute because of trauma”

“Trauma?”

“Something bad happens and it makes them terrified to speak…”

Sungmin’s mother died in a car crash…

“The trauma can cause people to become mute. And by curing that trauma, the mute can speak again. But of course, curing it would be difficult as it very compli…”

That means I know how to cure him. If I know the cause, I would know how to cure. I am brilliant. I CAN DO IT!

“Ok, thank you sir. That’s it for today.” Kyuhyun immediately jumped off the chair and ran for the exit.

“Young man, I’m not done with you!” Kyuhyun was going to cure Sungmin’s trauma. Maybe that would stop the tears Sungmin sheds.

He runs down the staircase and bumps into one of the maids. “Where’s Sungmin?”

“He’s outside with the nanny”

Kyuhyun ran towards the garden. Kyuhyun would definitely find a way to cure this boy. He would speak again. He would stop crying. He wouldn’t be so miserable.

The moment Kyuhyun saw Sungmin sitting on the edge of the bench holding a worn out teddy bear, Kyuhyun felt himself jump towards the smaller. He had hugged Kyuhyun so hard that Sungmin dropped the teddy bear he was holding.

Kyuhyun kept his hand on Sungmin shoulders and looked into those eyes of despair. “I’m gonna cure you, you hear me! You’re going to talk again” he said.

Then, just for a second Sungmin’s eyes didn’t seem so sad and his curved lips didn’t seem like a frown.

For sure, I’m going to cure you.
