Notes: A while ago I wrote a fic about Dean and God called
Sacred Heart. This companion ficlet popped out after watching the Doctor Who episode The Satan Pit.
If you were having a conversation with Sam about whether he subscribed to the duality theory of evil, which may seem unlikely but please the guy’s in a bar with a laptop and a Bible and a text on Ancient Persia and you’ve had five vodka tonics, anyway if you asked him whether he believed in the Devil, he’d duck his head and smile at you and flash those puppy dog eyes, and you’d suddenly forget all about why you asked him.
If you asked Sam whether be believed in the Devil and he was drunk enough, he might tell you that when he first encountered evil he thought it must come from someplace dark, someplace outside our knowing. But as he got older he thought that while that may be true, the worst evil he’d seen had been caused by people. And you’d consider a bit more closely this guy who looked he was cramming for exams while waiting to drive his drunken brother home, and you’d wonder what he’d seen to make him so cynical.
If you asked John whether he told his boys that the Devil was real, he’d look at you with weary eyes. “I think they worked that out for themselves,” he’d say and wipe a hand over his face. If you asked Dean whether Satan was the name of evil, he’d probably reply with a quip like “Hey I ain’t planning on looking up his MySpace page so doesn’t matter what the evil son of a bitch is called.”
If Sam asked himself whether he believed in the Devil, he might start to grin because after listening to Dean’s music selections it certainly seemed possible, but then the smile would fade on his face. Because there was a belief Sam had that he kept from himself. Sam did believe in the Devil, and that he lived in a domain of darkness. The thing Sam feared was that this place was inside him.
