If you asked Dean, and I can’t imagine why you would but maybe you got really drunk, anyway if you did ask him whether he believed in God, he’d snort and say something devastatingly witty like “Yeah, in fact I was going to become a priest but all the hot chicks in the world got together and begged me not to”. And then he’d challenge you to a game of pool and you’d lose fifty bucks to him and you’d forget all about why you asked him.
If you asked Dean whether be believed in God and he was drunk enough, he might tell you’d he’d seen enough evil that he had to believe there must be some sort of power to oppose it, to keep it in check or the things that make life worth living would have been wiped out by the bad things long ago. And you’d look at him a bit more closely and wonder what he could have seen, this guy who looked like a frat boy waiting for the next kegger.
If you asked John whether he’d raised his boys to believe in God, he’d tell you they’d spent a lot of time in church. Recently that mainly involved the pilfering of holy water and rosaries and crucifixes. Years ago, they’d stayed at the church with Pastor Jim and he had tried to teach them about faith and sin and being good. Most of what he said didn’t stick, although Sam picked up enough Latin to make him useful at exorcisms, and Dean enough guilt to make him miserable.
If Dean asked himself whether he believed in God, he’d make some joke like “Well I’ve made enough girls call out His name”, and smile to himself because Dean always had a snappy line. But what he’d think of when it was dark and cold and he felt lost wasn’t the Father, whose will must be done, but a Blessed Lady, a woman in white with long blonde hair, surrounded by a halo of fire. And if you were Dean you might sometimes say a prayer to her and ask her to forgive the things you had done in her name.
