I've only ever observed Lent once. In fact, before college, I don't think I'd ever even heard of it. My dad's side of the family is Catholic, but as my parents are both hippies, we only ever observed the big holidays. Christmas and Easter were the big ones, though they'd sometimes get nevergabe and I a little something on Valentine's day ( Read more... )

I was talking about Lent today and half of the people in the office had nooooo idea what I was talking about. SO WEIRD cuz in England, often people give stuff up for Lent regardless of whether they're religious or not. It blows my mind that so many secular people here haven't even heard of it.

Zoooomg, volunteer work is awesome and soooo fulfilling. Good luck!

You're forgetting that New England is still the United States. Our culture doesn't want us to give anything up. It's all about consumerism. Giving something up for Lent would mean one less thing being consumed, and would threaten the very fabric of the capitalist market. Or at least, that's my theory.

It's funny. I was looking at some pictures my mom sent me of some of our ancestors in Kansas in the 1880's up through the 1930's. It made me think of how resourceful they were back then. They had to be - they couldn't afford not to. These days, we throw everything out once we're done with it. With things the way they are today, I feel like this mentality needs to make a come-back.

I'm going to start slow with the volunteer work. A few hours a week, maybe.

Good for you giving up something for lent. I honestly don't think I could give any thing up.

It's not something I normally do this time of year. But this year, I just felt I needed to. And I'm sure if you really had to/wanted to, you could give something up. It's really just a test of will-power.

Actually I decided to give up something earlier this afternoon...sitting on my @$$ all day long doing nothing. For Lent, I've decided to do at least 30 minutes (more preferred) of DDR (or other exercise) every day.

That's awesome! I wish you the best with it! Um...what is DDR, though?
