ok, these are fucking awesome, and I seriously think you should get them. and if you don't. I will hahha.
"but there is something sacred about holding old vinyl in your hands.. not to mention the warm sound and large format cover art!" completely understand, and I second you there.

oh man! i recognise the first singer. my parents listened to this kind of music all the time on cassettes when i was little. i don't remembering loving it as a child but i also didn't not like it. it was just on but i'm glad it was. i think it laid the foundation for my love of melancholic indie rock. i've tried to convince other friends there is a connection. i think the melody to i'll be around by neko case was from an old vietnamese torch song. and i'll even stomach the 80s production of the some of the newer stuff my mum listens to. we tried to play hoang luong (i think i may have spelt the name incorrectly) at our wedding.

yeah, that's it! i didn't realise it was a wedding song. i played it too. one of the vietnamese restaurants i like going to in london burnt me a cd of her stuff. it was soooo nice of them.

i would double-check her name but i think my cds are still in storage and warren has our ipod today. if you want, maybe we can do an exchange.

i want to get my mum to tell me more about singers/musicians from this time period but i have a hard time articulating what "sound" i'm really into. i heard some newer stuff (sounded like late 90s production on the v-pop) over pho last night and it wasn't my thing at all.

oh man, i wish i went digging when i was there.. but i doubt hanoi has the records.. prob most of the vinyl you'd find in vietnam would be somewhere in saigon.funny though cuz a friend sent me some onra tracks awhile back (from an album touted to be all about viet samples) and i noticed that some of the stuff was actually in mandarin.. so were they chinese records too then ( ... )
