rites of passage and rest stops

Both my chicks are home and we're watching the Chuck finale together. M:TNG-1's graduation went off well, mostly, although the commencement speaker sucked. There was a ceremony before the big deal with just her department and the professors who actually knew the students. Her adviser handed her a certificate and gave her a hug ( Read more... )

Congrats to M:TNG-1!

I've never heard of a truckstop diner that segregates the civilians from the road warriors. Perhaps it's so they can chaw and cuss and eat without shocking the mundanes? Interesting...

That was the impression I got. There was definitely chaw involved. Whatever the reason, I was happy to be segregated from the sight of someone chewing on tabaccy.

Lovely to have them home for a while - and lovely to have them graduate. Facebook etc really does help them all keep in touch, too - my daughter's staying in touch with friends, not only in the UK but as far afield as China, since they graduated last year.

Your stop in Indiana sounds very like somewhere S2C is just writing about - and I am so amused by the 'equine podiatrist'!

It's particularly important to M:TNG-1 because I think only one of her college friends lives within a thousand miles of us!

That rest stop would have been the norm a few decades ago, but these days most are somewhere in between the posh one and the Indiana one.

Congrats to your daughter. Mine will (hopefully) be graduating in July. She has no idea what she wants to do next, though.

Mine has an idea, but she's going to be doing a community service project, Teach for America, first. It puts graduates in struggling schools that have trouble recruiting teachers. It will be helpful experience, and it gives her a break from being a student.

Congratulations to your daughter!
