I second this. I moved all of my banking to a credit union earlier this year, and I don't regret it one tiny bit!

(The only even SLIGHTLY down side is the lack of branches and short branch hours. But I feel that this is made up for by the fact that I can use any ATM at any 7-11 in the country without paying fees.)

I use Patelco Credit Union, and it reciprocates (I can use the 'banking facilities') at the San Mateo Credit Union.

Whichever CU you choose, start your account soon. I know Patelco will start an account with $5.00. Some perks go by how long you have been a member, not the amount you have in their institution. If you choose Patelco, you may certainly use me as a reference, but I don't think it is necessary any more.
