I'd scheduled a babysitter afternoon this week so I could go to a rheumatology follow-up and get some party planning/acquiring done without "help." Unfortunately, her Real Job needs her after all. 3) Bake cupcakes or something before the party date, and separate the mixture into a few bowls. Put different essence (vanilla, strawberry etc, or cocoa) into each and then bake. Let the kids taste them - they'll soon figure strawberry mixed with mint is pretty vile, and they can pick the flavour they liked best. it's an afternoon's baking but you can do it as an activity with them - they each get to mix some essence into one of the bowls of separated mixture, etc. It does work with 4 year olds because Zoe and the twins who are not yet two helped mix different colours for rainbow cupcakes, with mixture separated into bowls like that. That's my only idea for all those!

Cake compromises:
Half strawberry, half mint - layers maybe?
Strawberry cake with mint-leaf decoration
Or, I really like nimnod's idea. Science!
