And Everything: Ianto's story part five

Ianto sat opposite Doctor Harper in a small café near the hospital where he worked. Owen was on his break during a sixteen hour shift, he wore his pager on the belt of his trousers and a lose fitting t-shirt. He looked tried and thinner than the last time they meet.

Slowly the doctor stirred his coffee he had already told Ianto that he was twelve hours into his shift. Ianto feel both pity and respect for him, “when’s your next day off” he asked. Owen looked up at him and rested his head on the knuckles of his right hand, “Friday,” he yawned stretching a bit. “Right, the plan is fairly simple. We need to find Toshiko Sato”

“That does sound simple” Ianto thought it sounded too simple.

“I know where she is…” Owen continued.

“Let’s go around there then” Ianto interrupted. “Talk to her and explain things, about our dreams…” Ianto remember the touch of the blue-eyed man in his dreams. Remember his kiss and the way he could make his spine tingle when Jack, (was that his name?) touched him. “About Torchwood… is it?

“That’s where we run into a bit of a problem,” the doctor confessed. “She is locked up in a government facility called UNIT… but as luck would have it I’ve found us an ‘in.’”

“Great, for a minute there you had me thinking this was actually fucking possible.” Ianto felt his face getting red with angry. He leant in closer, he wasn’t sure that he wanted people to over hear this conversation. “I don’t how much a want to risk for a timeline where I’m a fucking tea boy” he snapped. The more he thought about his dreams of alternative timelines if that was even what they where. The more he wondered weather he actually wanted that life. In his dreams Lisa wasn’t there she had been replaced with this man…who he had managed to get pregnant. In his dreams he spent most of his time running around the sewers after weevils. How good could this other life really be?

“Your not just a tea boy.” Said Owen hearing him say that somehow felt wrong. Ianto thought that Owen felt it too because he frown at what he had said. “Your one of the team, you have the most important job, you covered our tracks kept us secret and safe.”

“No I cleaned up your shit.” Ianto snapped again. “I could do with a laugh so come on Doctor… tell me your master plan”

Owen took a sip of his coffee; he stirred it again and licked the sugar off the spoon. “Like I said I have an ‘in’ this intern how used to work at the hospital, a little bit strange she was. She disappeared for a bit then came back finished off her degree. After that she got a job at UNIT… and well she owes me one.”

“What do you mean she owes you one?”

“Do you remember a few months ago when the hospital, the royal hope hospital got transported to the moon?” Ianto nodded… how could anyone forget? “Well that’s where I work. I was half an hour from finishing a twenty-hour shift when the bloody space rhino’s teleported us up there.

We where up there for four hours while they searched for alien life forms among us, the air was getting thin everyone were dying slowly. I had handed out oxygen through out most of the hospital, but we where running out. Martha, she’s my ‘in’ was running out of air. She was trying to help someone else and I gave her the last of my air, I saved her life.”

Owen took another gulp of his coffee. “She is going to get us into UNIT, she’ll make out that Miss Sato is seriously ill and that she doesn’t know what’s wrong with her. She will ask in a couple of specialists, us, to find out what’s wrong with her.” Owen waved over a waitress and orders another coffee.

“I’ll pronounce her dead, with the aid of a drug that’ll slow her heart rate right down until its almost unnoticeable. We’ll stick her in a body bag and just carry her out of there”

“It seems like a good plan, but what makes you think this Martha would be willing to risk her career for you? For Sato? For Torchwood?”

“She a good girl and she always does the right thing,” he said.

“That doesn’t really…” Ianto was cut of by the doctor’s pager beeping. He looked at its screen and read the message.

“I have to go, listen we’re going in on Friday I’ll meet you at the hospital at one. A mate owes me a favour, so he’s letting us borrow an ambulance it’ll be more convincing if we have the proper gear.” And with that Owen was gone.

Ianto walked to the bus stop and sat down on the little red seat. He thought about what Owen had said as crazy as it sounded the doctor’s plan made sense. Something inside of Ianto told him that it was the right thing to do. The bus came and Ianto got on it he sat down at the back of the bus.

He closed his eyes and was finally with the blue - eyed man again. He was standing in the man’s office watching him sleep on the sofa near the manhole, which lead to the man’s bedroom. His stomach was big with Ianto’s unborn child his face was peaceful while he slept.

Ianto knelt by his side and reached out to touch his stomach. Jack moved a little in his sleep but didn’t wake up Ianto stroked his stomach. He could feel his child moving under his hand, inside his lover. He smiled to himself as he pressed his ear to Jack’s stomach; he closed his eyes for a while and listened to Jack steady breathing.

Ianto opened his eyes in time to get off the bus at his stop. He walked up the road to his flat part of him wanted to run away and leave Lisa to her fate. He stood out side to the door hating him for thinking it even for a moment.

He held his keys in his hand and watched the door for a long while before finally sliding it into the lock and going inside. Lisa was asleep, that was all she did these days he sat on the small wooden chair in the corner of the living and watched her until he fell asleep.
