Hey guys, sorry I haven't posted resently I'd like to say I'd been really busy or something but the truth is I had a mild case of writer's block, all better now I hope so where's part ten and if your very lucky I will post part eleven this afternoon and then the final part tomorrow, along with the first part of Owen's Story the universe. I think its fitting to leave his story in as part of the serices, especially since the ending of exit wounds.... I won't spoilt it if you haven't seen it (and the fic won't either).
Okay so without further adue here it is -
Life: Jack's Story - part ten.
Jack hit the wall and slid down it into the corner. A cyberman standing above him, another holding Lisa was standing next to the door. Suddenly something… a message rang out over the cybermen’s comms. The cybermen in their with Jack and Lisa were sent away to investigate some goings on in the shear room. Like good mindless henchmen the cybermen disappeared to carry out their duties. That was it the daleks must have just declared war. Lisa turned back towards him eyes wide in shock she walked over to him in a few quick steps and held her hand out to him. He took it, “lets find Yan and get out of here,” she said in a shaky voice. Jack nodded in agreement, she pulled him to his feet and they left the lab. All was strangely quite they walked slowly down the corridor. In the far distance they could hear the sound of guns and screaming. “We’re losing, aren’t we?” she asked in a quite voice.
“Not for long, the doctor will save us… the plant will survive and most of the population. However most of the Torchwood employees die. Only twenty seven survived.”
“Twenty seven” she repeated the number. “That’s not a lot… do I survive?”
Jack swallowed hard, but didn’t answer her.
“I die, don’t I?”
Again Jack didn’t answer, but she understood his silence.
“Oh god, you said so didn’t you? I didn’t know you were being serious”
“I’m so sorry” Jack said stroking her arm.
“We don’t have time for this” she said, she seemed to being trying to be brave.
Jack was more concerned about Ianto logic and history told him that he would be fine, but he wanted to see him to make sure that he was alive. “What floor does Ianto work on?”
“He’s up on twelve,” she said. They made their way to the staircase they were in the north side of the building and soon found the staircase. They started to climb it. “Once we’ve found Ianto its only ten floors down to the ground floor we’ll be able to get out from there”
“Right so all we’ve got to do is get up to twelve then down to two with out being seen by either the daleks or the cybermen”
“That’s right”
“Easy” said Jack trying his hardest to be brave; to be confident and to able to fight what ever came his way. Just like he did all those years in the future on the game station, dying for his doctor but living for the human race, the protector that’s why Rose brought him back. At least that’s what Jack liked to think. “All we need to do is find some sort of weapon” by now they where quite away up the stairs. Jack was looking around for something, anything that could be used to hit them with or short-circuit them somehow.
Lisa found a fire axe and broke the casing with one of her shoes. They continued they journey up the stairs. A blonde women phone pressed to her ear run past them to quick to stop her. Jack thought there was something about her that seemed familiar. They reached floor twelve and exited the stairwell. They walked slowly down a corridor, until the sound of metal boots approached them. Jack saw a storage cupboard grabbed Lisa’s arm and pulled her inside.
Quietly he closed the door behind them. They sat on the floor listening to the cybermen walking past. The sound of metal boots didn’t fade away; Jack put his finger to his lips indicating silence. Lisa complied they sat there for ages waiting for the cybermen to past. After a while Lisa moved closer to Jack and whispered very quietly in his ear, “if you’ve seen the future do you know if Torchwood wins? I mean I know I don’t…make it but does Torchwood protect the empire?”
“What empire?”
“The one Torchwood is helping to rebuild, an empire of the stars” her face lit up as she said it. Jack wondered how she managed to fight of the cybermen’s implants for so long. Since she seemed to have been easily brain washed by Torchwood one.
“Torchwood one falls, but two, three and possibly four survive”
“If we ever find four” she giggled. Jack was impressed, here she sat in the middle of an alien war hiding in a cupboard with a pregnant man and she still found the courage to laugh. She paused before asking, “do you know if Ianto survives?” Her voice was softer now as if it was a question she was scarred to ask.
“Yes he does,” she seemed to understand more than he had said.
“Do you know him? In your future, our future”
“I do”
“Are you and he… close?”
Jack was a little shocked by her question, “what makes you say that?”
“We meet in college, he only did a term there. But when he was there, he had this friend. They were always close maybe a little too close, if you know what I mean. He was all blue -eyed skinny little thing terribly shy but a brilliant dancer. And Yan just seemed to take to him.” She added as an after thought, “We didn’t get it together until after I finished college that was two years later. He said that he was just experimenting, but…”
“How did you know?”
“It was something in his eyes, when Yan looked at him there was something”
They sat in silence for a while until Lisa asked, “How did you and Ianto meet?”
“He begged me for a job, at Torchwood three” Jack smiled remembering Ianto lying on top of him in that warehouse, he felt so good lying on top of him his arms around Ianto’s waist. “He practically stalked me for almost a week” he smiled again. “He stood out side our front door with the most amazing coffee in the world, in any of the worlds that I’ve ever been too.”
“I swear that coffee of his is the only thing he loves more than me”
Jack wondered if Ianto loved him more than he loved Lisa. Perhaps Ianto could never love anyone like he loved her. Did that mean that he loved Jack any less? He stoked his stomach he could feel a horrible but small pain in his stomach. It was his baby surly this couldn’t be it?
“So he begged you for a job? Did he prove himself?”
“Oh yes, more than a hundred times over. I never understood his exam results or why he dropped out of college”
“He just drifted, never had a reason for staying in one place… but I guess I gave him one” she thought for a moment, “did you give him a reason to stay?”
“I guess I did” Jack said simply. Lisa was quite she seemed to thinking this new information over. “Yan’s friend… he confessed to me once that they… kissed.” She eyed Jack carefully, “do and Yan, I mean are you and Yan…lovers?”
“Yes we are”
“Do you love him?”
“More than I ever thought possible”
Lisa smiled a weak smile her eyes filled with unshed tears, “Is he the…” she tailed of unable to complete her sentence.
“Yes,” Jack confessed. “Ianto is the father” there was silence. Jack fiddled with his belt, it felt horrible and thigh. He didn’t know why he still wore it; there was something on his buckle. It was Toshiko’s perception filter, Jack suddenly had an idea but it would only work for one of them. He fiddled with it some more if he could reverse what Toshiko had done to it. And make it so that it would hide one of them - make them invisible. The pain in Jack’s stomach grow, he bit his lip preventing himself from crying out. ‘Oh god’ he thought ‘I’m going to lose her.’
He kept playing with the perception filter trying to make it doing what he needed it to do. Finally he got it. “This” he told her. “Is a perception filter, it can hide one of us from them. They won’t be able to see us… it will make you invisible.”
“Me?” she asked with tears building up in her eyes. “Why me?”
“Because if you don’t run, you’ll die” they sat there looking each other in the eyes for a moment.
“Maybe I am meant to die here, did you ever think of that?”
“Yes I considered that, but I think you make Ianto happy and even if that means I lose him. I want Yan to be happy.” Lisa shed a tear.
“Does he sing to you in the morning when he’s making breakfast?”
“Always”
“Then he is happy, promise me that you’ll look after him for me.” She said standing up.
“What are you doing?” she leant down and pressed the switch on Jack’s perception filter.
“Promise me”
“I promise”
“His favourite baby name is Gwynne. But his great grandmother was called Evelyn and I know he’ll love it if you name the baby after her.” Lisa pushed open the cupboard door.
“Don’t,” Jack said trying to move but the pain in his stomach prevented him from standing.
“I’ll distract them for you, make a run for it and keep Yan safe.”
“No” yelled Jack but she was already gone. Jack laid on the floor clutching his stomach the pain growing more intense.
