Life: Jack's Story - part eleven

Jack crawled out of his cupboard and back towards the stairs. Now that Lisa had gone he needed to let things pan out as history dictated. The pain was getting bigger, he knew he didn’t have much time, but he didn’t know what was going to happen to his baby. He had to get to the stairwell there was only one man that could help him now and he was on the top floor.

Jack shoved the door open and fell side ways into the stairwell. He looked up the long flight of stairs leading to the top floor and down the stairs leading to the basement and the TARDIS. He considered for a moment rolling down the stairs and crawling into the TARDIS but with him inside she would run all the way to the end of the universe and he would be in an even worse position. He reached out for the banister and pulled himself up on it. Inch by inch he clawed his way upwards towards the top of Torchwood tower. In was gruelling work but Jack pressed on he had too. The pain in his stomach was far more intense now and it was making it harder and harder to keep moving.

He screamed knelt in the stairwell between the nineteenth and twentieth floors. The pain was beyond any he had ever felt before. Nothing in a whole year of dieing of torture even came close to this. He gave up and lay on his back on the landing between the stairs. He stared up at the rest of the stairs above him. He wondered if he would die, would he come back and feel vacant or would he just stay dead this time.

After a while of lying there hidden from the cybermen and daleks Jack noticed someone coming down the stairs. Was it the Doctor already? Surely not, there hadn’t been any indication that the Doctor had worked his magic. Even though Jack new he wouldn’t be effected by it he imagined he’d feel at least a light breeze. The man was getting closer and now Jack new who it was - Bilis Manger.

He willed himself to move again. He managed to sit up right and inched his way towards the top of the stairs. He started to slide down them, on his backside like he used to do when he was a child. He kept pushing himself down them but Manger was quicker. Jack felt him clamped his hand on Jack’s shoulder. Jack turned around Manger had a gun pointed at him. Jack laughed through his pain, knew that Manger’s plan wasn’t to kill him, but to kill his baby.

At this point after everything he’d been through in his pregnancy Jack knew that she’d survive. A blast to the stomach and she didn’t even have an ill regular heartbeat. Almost thirty hour suck in a room filling with water and she slept through most of it. His little girl was though and something told Jack that being born in the middle of a war wasn’t going to do her any harm either. She was made of stronger stuff than that, just like her Daddy.

His laughter seemed to stun Bilis Manger for he stopped in his tracks gun still pointed at Jack, “I am going to kill you Captain Jack Harkness” he appeared to think it was necessary to point this out. “Well not you, your child” he said again with that cruel smile of his.
“I will destroy everything that you care about”

“I’ve been threaten with that before and we managed to survive, all of us by one way or another.” Then it happened the Doctor working his magic, the loud rushing of wind rushed past them along with the cries of the daleks and the cybermen’s screams. Jack noticed it then Manger clinging to the banister as if holding on for dear life. He was still trying to stand up right and point the gun at Jack. But it was too late, Jack had figured it out. “You came from the void” he said.

Bilis Manger’s eyes widen in shock as he realised what Jack had said. “I will revenge my lord,” he shouted at Jack.

“Really?” said Jack. He kicked out as hard as he could. He managed to kick Manger in the stomach, the old man doubled up making his fatal mistake. He let go of the handrail and was sucked back into the void along with all the other monsters. Soon the wind stopped, but the pain in Jack’s stomach didn’t. He lay on his back and screamed with the pain. All he wanted now was to have the baby, have her in his arms and for this pain to end.

Jack must have blacked out because the next thing he knew was the doctor kneeing beside him. He was lightly tapping Jack’s face. “Don’t worry” he said when Jack opened his eyes. “Everything is going to be okay, I’ve got you Captain.” With the strength that Jack was always surprised that the Doctor processed he lifted Jack into his arms.

Jack was drifting in and out of the darkness the Doctor was fixing his vortex manipulator. “I can’t use the TARDIS, she won’t like it and I don’t know where we’d end up.” It beeped letting them know it was fixed and ready to go. “I can’t risk her taking us to somewhere with no medical help or hospitals. But don’t worry this kind of operation is easy… simple even.” He smiled at Jack. The smile that always made Jack feels safe. He passed out again; when he woke up he was on a bed in some sort of flat. There someone singing a soft tune in an alien language. It was the Doctor singing to Jack’s little girl, he was stood by the window in the tiny bedroom and rocking her back and fore in his arms. Jack didn’t have a mark on him and was thin again.

“Captain” said the Doctor, “come and meet your daughter” he grinned and for the first time in decades Jack felt alive.
