Life: Jack's Story - part eight.
The ground beneath his feet was solid. Strangely that was a good thing. Jack tried to feel his way around his new surroundings. He walked blindly around for a while taking random lefts and rights here and there trying to find a wall or door anything else that was solid. The sounds of the creatures wasn’t changing, they neither grow loader or quieter…they just stayed the same. Something about that was terrifying. He curled up into a ball on the floor and used his arms to protect his stomach. Some of the creatures were screaming now Jack tired to block out the sound by singing softly to his baby. He lay still on the ground and closed his eyes the ground was hard and cold. Attentively he reached out and ran his hand across it. It felt like concrete, normal run of the mill, Earth concrete.
He thought about what they knew about Bilis Manger, he had told Jack and Gwen that he could see all of history. History - past tense, but he did show Gwen a vision of the future…but the rest of the team saw people from their pasts. He definitely seems to lean more towards the past then future. Of course that made sense, had he been able to see into the future he would have known that Jack killed Abaddon. The vision he showed Gwen only came true when he carried it out - when he stabbed Rhys.
So it was a trick maybe he could only see things that he knew had already happened. Maybe he killed Rhys and then showed Gwen the vision. Jack’s brain was starting to hurt; he rolled onto his back and stared upwards into the darkness. He wasn’t sure that made sense Gwen brought Rhys to the hub because she thought he’d be safe there… but maybe Bilis knew that. There were to many maybes in that scenario, he needed to focus on what was real.
Manger definitely had more power in the past then he did in the future. After all he managed to send him and Toshiko back to the past. To meet the real Captain Jack Harkness, that wasn’t a trick as much as it was a game. He had been toying with Jack then trying to mess with Jack’s emotions. Perhaps he was trying to give Jack something that was worth opening the rift for. At first he had thought that Manger had been watching Ianto, Owen, Toshiko and Gwen for some time - playing a very long game. But now it made sense to him Manger didn’t need to watch them. He simply looked into the past and saw their entire lives, and then he handpicked the people that could influence them most.
So if Manger’s power was in history, in the past then that’s where Jack was now. Somewhere in the past…great he’d probably dropped Jack in the dark ages here him and the baby would die when during the birth. If there wasn’t some one who could perform a c-section then…Jack didn’t know what would happen.
He thought about Ianto and the vision that Manger had shown him…what would Ianto’s worst nightmare be? Easy the battle of Canary Wharf. No losing Lisa and their baby in the battle of Canary Wharf. But Ianto was screaming like it was something worst then that. Then it hit him like a ton of bricks, Jack was at Canary Wharf now, was this the day of the battle? Was Jack going to be murdered in the battle? But here was he now? Alone in this darkness.
His silence question was answered almost intently, when all the lights came on. Revealing that Jack was in a large empty room, like a warehouse. Where was that growling coming from? He must be near Torchwood ones vaults… ‘Oh no’ Jack whispered to himself.
When Ianto first joined he found it strange that Torchwood three didn’t have an exercise area for its prisoners… well for its aliens. He had told Jack that it was just a big empty room where they here allowed to run around for ten minutes a week, one alien at a time of course. Jack figured that he was in this exercise area. An alarm started to sound, that wasn’t good.
Jack heard something opening at the far end of the room. He turned to look at it. Instead of some rampant alien life form bounding through the doors, several armed guards and a man in a white coat came through. They walked over to Jack, the guards pointed their guns at him and the man asked, “who are you and how did you get here?”
“Captain Jack Harkness” Jack replied. “I’m from Torchwood three, I was sort of dropped off here… what day is it?” The man frowned at Jack it must have seemed like a very stupid questions.
“27th of July 2007” shit thought Jack it was the day of the attack.
“What time is it?”
“It is eight fifteen” he replied stiffly. That was good the ghost shift wasn’t until ten past noon and the cybermen didn’t start coming through until two. The Daleks showed up at half past, so all Jack had to do was get out of the building, preferably out of London before two thirty. How hard could that be?
“All links with Torchwood three were lost on the 31st of December 1999, no contact official or other wise has be made since that date, so don’t try and bull shit me” said the man leaning in towards Jack. The man was Japanese he had silver hair and a harsh face. Jack thought he recognised him, but he didn’t know where from. Two of the armed guards lifted Jack to his feet. “This way please” said the man in the white coat. Jack was escorted out of the room.
“Where are you taking me?” Jack demanded, only too aware that he had to get out of the building, the city if possible. “I want to speak to Hartman, Yvonne Hartman now,” Jack told them firmly. Hoping that he had gotten her name right.
“I don’t think so,” said the man in the white coat.
“Where are you taking me?” Jack repeated his first question.
“To the human containment unit, you will be stored until a member of Torchwood personnel becomes available to perform some tests on you” the man looked at Jack. “I think I’ll put you at the top of our list, a man whom appears to be pregnant, now that’s interesting.”
They forced Jack into a lift, one of the guards pressed a button and the lift started to move upwards.
They stepped out into a plain white corridor that was one of the things Jack hated about Torchwood one - it was so lifeless, no personality. They turned left into another corridor; this corridor was a little bit different to the last one. It had doors dotted along each of the two walls. All of the doors were numbered Jack thought he knew where he was the containment unit. One of the guards opened a door to Jack’s right and they pushed him inside locking the door behind him. There was a bed, toilet, desk, chair and a sink in the room. Jack sat down on the bed he had to think of a plan and quick. He lay down on the bed and waited he could do anything until they opened the door.
Why did the Doctor have to break his vortex manipulator? If it was working he could have been out of his cell and back in Ianto’s arms in thirty seconds. The more he thought about escaping the more impossible things seemed. Until he remembered something the Doctor had told him during their year on the valiant. Where they had whispered their deepest, darkest secrets through the walls of their cells. The Doctor had told all about the battle of canary wharf and how Torchwood had tried to claim the TARDIS as their own. He had said that they had moved it to one of their storage facilities. ‘So’ thought Jack, ‘all I have to do is give the guards the slip and find the TARDIS. I’ll wait there until the Doctor comes back.’ He had his plan simple through it was, now all he had to do was wait. Some hours later the door opened again.
“What time is it?” asked Jack as soon as the door opened.
The guard looked confused but he checked his watch, “its ten to eleven,” he answered. “Come on, its time to do your tests”
“No,” begged Jack. “We have to run, evacuate the city the ghosts aren’t ghost their cybermen and the daleks they will awaken soon. This whole place is going to be destroyed.” The guard laughed, actually laughed.
“You expect me to believe this tripe? You must think I’m as stupid as I look” he reached down and grabbed Jack’s arm pulling him to his feet and then out of the door. As soon as they were out of the cell Jack kicked the guard and ran for it.
Unfortunately he only made it around the corner before meeting four more guards. They escorted him to a lift and they once again went up when the doors opened they stepped out into another corridor. They turned left and headed towards a set of double doors.
Once through them the corridor changed somewhat. There a lot of white doors and windows that showed labs on the other side of them. The guards opened a door on the left to one of the labs. They escorted Jack inside and sat him down on the bed. They lined up against the wall and waited. The man in the white coat returned accompanied by a young black woman, whom Jack recognised as Lisa Hallett.
