Life: Jack's Story - part six

The door to the tiny room in the sewers slammed shut behind Jack. He froze, he was kneeing next to Ianto’s body, which was on the floor of this tiny room. Jack gripped his terrified that Ianto was dead and of the footsteps that he could hear approaching him from behind. “Hello Captain Harkness” said the slow hypnotic voice of Bilis Manger. “If that is your real name” he chuckled at his own joke.

“What have you done to Ianto?” demanded Jack.

“Nothing, compared to what you did to my lord” his eyes flashed menacingly.

“Your lord?” questioned Jack. “Oh you mean that massive demonic thing that was killing half the population of Cardiff?”

Bilis smirked at this apparently if was funny. He leant forward so that his face was an inch away from Jack’s. “You are going to suffer for what you have done, you are going to die slowly in this room with everything you have ever loved. Knowing that you killed both of them and that fact will torture you every time you come back.” He leant back from Jack and slowly circled him and Ianto. “But you can take comfort in that fact that this torture won’t last for long, before you die again.” He smiled his cruel smile.

“But…my baby” Jack stoked his stomach, “you can’t”

“You expect me to show you mercy when you had none for my lord, you will die in here over and over again for the rest of eternity. Knowing your lover and child died because you deemed the rest of the city more important” Bilis pointed at the door, Jack shone his light over it. It was a new, shiny metal vault door. “There’s no escape, that door has a heat sensor which activates the emergency lock down, a 3 hour time lock - which means the code changes every three hours and a deadlock steal that occurs if someone tries to drill through the plate of glass at its core. I would like to see your team get around that.”
With that Bilis vanished into thin air. Leaving Jack and Ianto alone the only sounds were Ianto’s breathing and a slow but steady tickling sound of running water.

Jack desperately looked for the source of the trickling water, shinning his light frantically around the wall of the tiny room. It reminded him of the cell unit had Toshiko in five years go when she tired to save her mother’s life. Toshiko could crack a vault door something so simple would be beneath her. She’d told Ianto as much when they were trapped in the cellar of the lead cannibals farmhouse, she could get past it all… expect for the heat sensor. Owen could get past the heat sensors, dead men don’t have body heat and he did it before. If only he could get hold of them, he pulled out his phone and shone his torch light over it. No signal, of course not he was in a sewer. He threw it aside and started to feel around the walls for signs of water.

He found a slick of water running down one of the walls; he shone his light up towards the ceiling. There in the join between the ceiling and the wall was a wide pipe, which was spilling the water into the room. It was filling up slowly but steady the floor already had a large puddle in the centre of it. Ianto had moved but Jack could still hear him breathing, he dragged Ianto into the corner and propped him upright. So that he wouldn’t have his face in the water that now covers most of the floor. Jack started to pound on the door and scream his lungs out for help. Why didn’t he get the doctor sup up his phone? What was so bad about being able to get a signal anywhere in the galaxy? He screamed and pounded until his hands were raw and his throat was sore. He turned his back to the door and slid to the floor dissolving into floods of tears.

“Stop that,” said Ianto, who had just come around and was rubbing his while checking out his surroundings. “I don’t think more water is going to help us”

Jack giggled how was that Ianto always knew how to make him laugh? “You really think a few tears is going to make that much difference?”

Ianto stood up and walked over to him. He knelt in front of Jack and tied up his bootlace, “No I don’t think it will make any difference” his eyes took in the door behind Jack. “I suppose that’s infallible” Jack nodded. “Shit” Ianto sat himself down next to Jack and took Jacks hands in his own. “What happened here?” he asked inspecting the redness on Jacks hands.

“Banging on the door too hard” Jack replied.

“Does it hurt?” Ianto asked. Jack shook his head no. Ianto put an arm around Jacks shoulders. Part of him wanted to pull away and tell Ianto how angry and up set he was with him. But a bigger part wanted to melt into Ianto and be held by him until his world came to an end. Ianto was staring at Jack’s belly. No not his belly, his t-shirt. “Where the hell did you get those t-shirts from?”

“Owen brought them for me. I was too embarrassed to go and shop looking like this.”

“Well the whole lot of them are too big”

“I know he said he just brought any thing that both him and Tosh could fit into at the same time”

“Who mutilated your trousers?”

“Gwen, Tosh was tiring to get me into track suit bottoms!”

“The horror” giggled Ianto.

“Yan… I’m sorry”

“I should be the one apologising” Ianto sighed heavily. “I’ve been awful to you, more than awful I’ve been rude, insensitive, mean and generally a fucking arsehole… but you really hurt me, Jack.”

Jack turned to look Ianto in the eye, “Because I left?” he asked. Jack had thought they were pasted that after three months of make up sex Ianto had finally forgiven him.
“No, because you trusted Owen and Toshiko more then me.” Jack hadn’t seen that coming it felt like a punch in the stomach.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“You don’t have to be, I’m sorry Jack. I’m sorry that I called you a freak; I don’t know where that came from. I’ve never thought of you like that…I was scared and upset and I just wanted to hurt you.” He paused. “I sorry I pushed you, it didn’t hurt did it?”

“No” Jack rested his head on Ianto’s shoulder. The water was almost covering his legs now. He checked his watch they had been down there for three hours now. It was going to be a very slow death.

“I don’t want you to think that I don’t want this, I’m just terrified”

“Of what?” Jack asked.

“Of you losing the baby, of losing you.” Something in Ianto’s voice told Jack that he was speaking of past experiences.

“Did you lose a baby before?”

“Yes” Ianto’s voice was barely more then a whisper. “Lisa was pregnant when they converted her. She told me on the morning of the battle, she wanted to take the day off to celebrate but I was looking forward to being a part of the ghost shift…It was my first one, so I made her come in with me… it was my fault.” Ianto stood up and moved into the centre of the room.

“It wasn’t your fault Yan,” said Jack he could feel his eyes welling up.

“Yes it was” Ianto turned to face Jack, tears running down his face. “And now I’ve done it again… if I had been more alert he wouldn’t have been able to jump me and we wouldn’t be down here.”

Jack stood up (with some difficulties) and moved towards Ianto. “This isn’t your fault Ianto its mine, I pissed off Manger when I killed abaddon.”

“No its mine, through my actions I’ve killed my lover and my child all over again” he dropped to his knees. Jack pulled him into a hug the best that he could, Jack was still standing so Ianto was hugging his stomach more than actually hugging him. Ianto continued to sob while Jack stoked his hair in an effort to calm him down. They stayed like that for a while, until Ianto looked up at Jack a smile on his face, “I can hear her moving” he whispered.

“She always moves more when she can hear you” Jack told him.

“She knows me?”

“Of course she does, she’s going to be as clever as her Daddy.” Still smiling Ianto stroked Jacks stomach.

“Wait if I’m Daddy, then what does that make you?”

“Technically I’m Mommy, but I not going to tell her that”

Ianto laughed, “I will.” He promised.

“I need to sit down,” said Jack moving back towards a wall. Ianto helped to sit down again. The water now covered his legs and was up to his stomach. Ianto sat next to him.

“Your going to catch your death of cold” Ianto wrapped his arms around Jack again.

“That’s what your worried about?” asked Jack.

“Well, yeah I mean you don’t think for a second that Owen, Tosh and Gwen aren’t already on their way here. I left them messages before I came to get you, I bet you’ve rang them and now we’re both out of range. There’s now way their not panicking.”

“I see your point, but what if Manger’s got to them first?”

“Wouldn’t happen, Torchwood’s too quick for him.” said Ianto with such confidence that Jack didn’t dare question it. Ianto rubbed Jack belly and Jack allowed himself to melt into his young lover. He closed his eyes and moaned softly in enjoyment. “I have a few questions”

“Fire at will” muttered Jack; now that he had Ianto again he wasn’t going to do anything to lose him. Even if it was only for a few hours, Jack was going to have a happy family life.

“How do you know when you’re pregnant?”

“The sudden morning sickness gives it away and the cravings for white chocolate covered pickles”

“How come you didn’t get pregnant before now? I mean we don’t use protection very often”

“I can’t grantee that I haven’t been without realising it and then died before the morning sickness kicked in. I don’t get until I’m about a month in.” he paused thinking about it. “But I’m on top a lot so…that might be why.” Jack rubbed his stomach again thinking about the signs that always made him reach for a pregnancy test. “Plus I get super horny”

“Your always horny.”

“I know, but I mean really horny.”

“What do you mean?”

“Normal horny is dropping my pen on the floor and watching you arse when you pick it up. Super horny is when I start think that weevils have a nice wiggle when they walk.” Ianto laughed heartedly.

“Ianto?” came a voice from the other side of the door.

“Owen?”

“Yeah, hey it’s a good thing I got here first. There are heat sensors on the door. Don’t worry; Tosh is going to talk me through cracking the code. Hopefully we’ll have you both out of there in an hour”

Jack felt relieved, but he couldn’t help thinking that things rarely went to plan, just look at how Gwen’s wedding turned out.
