Okay guys enjoy....

Life: Jack's Story - part five.

Jack lay on the sofa in his office staring at the ceiling. It was three weeks since the night that Ianto found out about their baby; their daughter and he hadn’t spoken so much as two words to Jack since. Owen had explained it to him using a side show with ultrasound pictures, DNA stands showing that the baby was his and several other illustrations that explained in detail how mankind had develop (or was going to develop) in the three thousand years before Jack was born. Ianto must have understood he wasn’t a stupid man, but he was stubborn and these days he didn’t even make eye contact and had started calling him ‘sir’ again. Gwen had sat through Owen's (four hour) sideshow as well, she understood what she was being told but she didn’t like it. But was cooping with it although she wasn’t making any effort to hide the fact she thought it was alien and unnatural. Jack could see her point, but at least she was trying. Toshiko and Owen were his rock these days; he honestly didn’t know how he would have survived without them.

Jack stoked his stomach and tried not to cry, he’d promised himself no matter what his hormones were doing. There would be no more crying over Ianto Jones. He wasn’t even mad at Ianto, he’d freaked out when his wife told he she was pregnant back in the twenties and that was a ‘normal’ pregnancy. He had gotten over being called a freak as well; he’d been called far worse in his time. What was hurting him was Ianto’s unwillingness to even try and talk it over with him and not to even look at him was in Jack’s opinion childish. At that moment Ianto walked in and place a hot cup of coffee on Jack’s desk. Jack could smell it from the sofa, “can’t have coffee” said Jack quietly.
Ianto looked in his direction, “of course not you pregnant” he said softly. “Would you like some juice or milk sir?”
“No, I would like you to call me Jack,” said Jack.
“Would you like anything to eat?” asked Ianto pretending like he hadn’t heard Jack’s last comment.
“No thank you Ianto” said Jack continuing to stare at the ceiling. Ianto picked the coffee up again and stood in Jack’s office for a moment before turning to leave.
“Yan, if you wanted to say something…” said Jack hoping he’d read Ianto’s signals right.
“No, sir nothing” Ianto said softly before leaving. Jack felt like crying again.

Jack spent most of the day lying on the sofa in his office drifting in and out of sleep; at five Owen gently nudged him awake. “We’re going home if that’s alright,” he said in a voice that was little more than a whisper.

“When you say we?”

“Me, Gwen and Tosh… Ianto says he’s got paperwork to finish, I’ll stay if you don’t want to be alone with him”

“No, its fine he won’t come in hear anyway”

“Brilliant” said Gwen from behind Owen. “My anniversary today, going to make Rhys a special dinner he’ll be surprised to see me home before him”

“Congratulations” said Tosh “you still up for that game of pool Owen?”

“Why not, I’m going to beat you this time” he threatens. “See you tomorrow Captain”

“See you Jack,” said Tosh giving him a quick peck on the cheek before leaving. Gwen waved as she headed for the door. Jack listened to the cog door rolling back, they were gone. Leaving just him and Ianto alone in the hub. Jack got up to stretch his legs he took a walk up to the hothouse. He figured that he would feed the plants and hide from Ianto. He walked up the spiral stairs towards the hothouse when he reached the second level he turned around and gazed at the hub’s lower level.

He could see Ianto cleaning up after Owen in the autopsy room. Jack had noticed that Owen was being messier than usual since Ianto had called him a corpse. Jack watched his former lover until Ianto left the autopsy room and entered the main part of the hub. Ianto had looked up at Jack and for a brief moment locked eyes with him. Ianto quickly looked away and set about empting the rubbish bins. Jack entered the hothouse and sat on the floor, strangely the floor of the hothouse was one of the coldest places in the hub, next to the morgue and autopsy room. Jack closed his eyes.

The next thing he heard was the emergency hotline. He got up and went over to the computer in the hothouse. According to the emergency call that was made a woman had witnessed a young girl being dragged into the sewers by a dark man with horrible facial injuries. The Torchwood computers had flagged it as a weevil sighting. Weevils taking prisoners? It sounded odd to say the least but Jack made sure the police weren’t going to look into it. The hothouse door opened “Jack” said Ianto “did you see the weevil sighting, shall I call one of the others in for back up?”

“No they have plans tonight, we’ll check it out if it looks dangerous I’ll call Tosh and Owen in” Jack threw the SUV keys at Ianto. “You drive, I can’t reach the steering wheel anymore.” Ianto rolled his eyes but agreed.

They drove in silence until after ten minutes or so Ianto asked “So where you ever going to tell me?”

“Tell you what?” asked Jack stupidly.

“About the baby” snapped Ianto. “Or were you going to wait until Owen cut you open and pulled out my daughter?”

That was the first time that Ianto had referred to Jack’s baby as his daughter. “So you do believe us then? I thought that you hadn’t spoken to me because you didn’t think she is yours”

“Of course I believe you, Owen puts together some pretty damning evidence which made it hard not to believe you” Ianto paused. “It knew it was the truth, because Owen and Toshiko believed it. When it comes to aliens and half truths there’s no fooling those two”

Jack couldn’t argue with that logic. “I was going to tell you at dinner that night… I wanted it to be special” They fell quite again and neither off them said anything until they reached their destination. Ianto pulled up and turn off the engine, they both got out of the car. Jack having a little more trouble then Ianto did. Ianto found the manhole that the girl was supposedly dragged out and called Jack over. “I don’t think I can fit in there,” said Jack stoking his stomach.

“Bit you’ve never said that about a hole before” said Ianto with a very cheeky grin.

“Least not about one of yours” Ianto rolled his eyes. “Why don’t you check it out, remember don’t go being a hero if it looks like trouble come back”

“Yes sir” said Ianto as he started to climb down the ladder.

“Oh Ianto, can we drop the sir? And call me Jack again?”

Ianto looked Jack up and down slowly. He must have been a sight in his trousers that Gwen had let out for him using elastic and material that didn’t quite match. His massive t-shirt that was baggy on him to spite his size and bore the logo of one of Owen’s favourite bands. He had asked Tosh to tie his boots that morning but had a feeling that one of the laces had come undone. All of this was topped off with his usual coat, which he couldn’t do up anymore in short he looked a mess. “I’ll be on the comms, Jack,” said Ianto before disappearing from sight.

Jack sat on the ground and leant against the wheel of the SUV. He stuck his legs out in front of him and tutted to him when he noticed that one of his laces had indeed come undone. Absent-minded he rubbed his stomach in a slow and calming motion. “How are you doing Yan?” he asked while pressing his ear.

“Nothing yet, there seems to be a chamber up head, I’m checking that out now… I looks like a dead end I think I’ll…Aaaahhhhh!”

“Ianto” shouted Jack. He struggled to his feet and approached the manhole. “Ianto, Yan can you hear me?” asked Jack as he sized up the manhole once again. He pulled out his mobile and dialled Owen, nothing. Then he tried Toshiko, Nothing and then Gwen voicemail. He shoved back into his pocket and pulled out his gun. Slowly he climbed down the manhole, which was made difficult due to his current size. When he reached the bottom Jack shouted for Ianto his voice echoed of the tunnel’s walls. Slowly he made his way down the tunnel torch now out he shone his light into every corner until he reached a T-junction. He shone his light to the left and saw that the tunnel went on for miles in that direction. He shone it to the right and saw Ianto lying on the floor. Jack hurried towards him, only realising that it was a trap when it was too late.
