What: Helping someone in need Who: Kurenai, L When:Late Thursday/Early Friday Where: Corner of North St, Kurenai's house Rating: PG-13 (?) Open/Closed To: L
Knowing how difficult it could be for someone in L's situation Kurenai was doing everything she could to help him adapt. She was even debating not telling anyone that he was living with her unless she got his express permission. Havoc would be told, because she was honest to a fault with him but as Havoc was a police officer she had a feeling L wouldn't object. Considering that she had no idea of Watari's methods Kurenai wasn't aware that keeping L awake for this type of situation, nor was she truly aware of the scope of his fragility's. All she was truly aware of was that he was someone in need and she could help him and would do so to the best of her ability. She would work her ass off to make sure he felt safe and secure, and had accepted that in the event they could not find Watari she'd do that full time

Kurenai was amused when L assumed she meant loved one in a romantic sense. "I more meant parental love, Ryuzaki. It is possible for someone to love you in a non-romantic sense, where they worry over you and look out for your well-being." She saw how solemn he became instantaneously, and realized that she had hit upon something he probably hadn't considered. She had been there when the Chairman got sick, and it wasn't pretty.
When L held out his hand she reached past him to the top draw and pulled out a first aid kit. Quickly bandaging the small puncture for him she decided to leave the kit out just in case.
"Parental love" did not seem to register. L squinted, staring at the desktop, shaking his head slightly. "Watari is not my parent," he said. "He takes care of me, and he gets me what I need, and he helps if I'm in trouble." Clearly, he did not associate those things with parents. "And Watari does not love me, in any way... I can do things that no one else can. If I couldn't, he would be with someone who could." he held still, on-edge but not panicking, as she bandaged his finger.
Kurenai chose not to press the issue, truly feeling that it wasn't something of major importance. Instead she decided to try a different tactic. "Watari has his reasons for taking care of you, getting you want you need, and helping you. Most people would say his reasons are rooted in that he cares about your well-being. Others would say he is acting as someone who has your best interests at heart." She was careful to not press to firmly or maintain contact for too long.
L tilted his head. "Do people... really do that?" he asked, furrowing his brow, clearly disbelieving Kurenai's words about cares and best interests. "It's like I said. He takes care of me because he doesn't want me to die... because if that happens, my brain dies too, and he needs that. So, I fund his orphanage, and he keeps me alive. It's a completely communal symbiotic relationship," L said, with the same attitude as someone who had just balanced an equation perfectly. "But... for reasons other than my own... I want him to be OK."
Kurenai smiled in a fashion some might call motherly. "Some people, yes." The more they spoke the more aware she was becoming that L wasn't raised in a normal fashion. That explained a lot. "Communal symbiotic relationships are based on mutual need, and typically evolve into some level of caring." Kurenai explained this in a teacherly fashion. "I'm sure those reasons include you appreciating his presence and place in your life."
L squinted, not understanding Kurenai's smile, but rather liking it. Even if what she said was reliant on experiences he'd never had, he was able to get the gist of what she was saying, and he supposed that it was based somewhat on mutual need and that some caring was involved. He timidly returned that smile with one of his own, wanting very badly to connect on some level even if those parts of his brain simply didn't work.
"You were going to bed," he said, returning to the computer screen. "I'm keeping you awake."
Kurenai could tell that L was doing his best to process what she was trying to get across and she suddenly felt worried that she could be overtaxing him. When she saw him timidly return the smile it made her feel slightly more secure, pleased that she was not the only one making an effort when it really came down to it.
"I was, and I should do that." she sighed, turning to leave. "Do you like Belgian waffles? I can make them for breakfast tomorrow if you do. Otherwise I'll think of something."
"If we get up early... waffles are OK," L said slowly, as if weighing whatever catastrophic occurrences could take place if the two did not coincide. "Yes... if we're up early, before seven, we can have waffles." he returned to his typing, stopping occasionally to eat a sugar cube.
