My son has the CD  Silly Songs with Larry, that we got for him despite my aversion to the god message in Veggie Tales.  Especially good is the Pirates who don't do anything, and Song of the Cebu.

I describe myself as a pagan, but I don't actually worship, ever, since it's religion that I'm disinterested in, not worship or spirituality.  So, let's ( Read more... )

I think you should in fact ask her to include words like Temple, Synagogue, Goddess, Mandir, Mosque, Jinja, Derasar, Wat and so on.

I am also curious how the teacher defined God for the students- was it defined simply as a supreme being or was it explained just as the Christian God or that many monotheists believe in a god. God could mean Allah or the Great Spirit or Yahweh or what have you. *grumble* I really do not have a problem with people following their own religion, but I really want it out of our schools. I know the Pledge of Allegiance issue may seem petty or frivolous to some, but I believe that removing the word God from it should happen. *sigh*

2. STUPID SCHOOL! EAT ME YOU CONFORMISTS!
3. b/c the world is a religious world (stupid george worthless bush) and my invisible man is better than your invisible man (even though they're both monotheistic (primarily)) so it's the same damned invisible man!! you cant get away from it..

4. we decided to educate my daughter in ALL religions, even the small ones/destructive ones to some people.. and then she can choose what she feels suits her best..

I would ask how they're defining "God," and the question "which god are you teaching my child about?" tends to confuse them mightily; polytheism is a very alien concept for most Americans ( ... )

I think that might be the tack I'm gonna take. I'm pretty definitely going to speak to her about it, but using the "exactly which god are you teaching my son about?" might be the most productive.

I teach in a public school, and I am a Christian, and I still have issues with god stuff in school. For example, the Pledge of Allegiance, which we say every morning, has one nation under god in it . . . which I think is ridiculous. It shouldn't be in there at all. We should just say, "one nation, indivisible". If my daughter brought home a list of sight words that had god on them, I would be upset as well. I believe that religion is a very private thing - and I don't believe that there is a "right" or a "wrong" religion . . . so I don't think the kids should be exposed to those types of things in school, unless they are exposed to all religions ( ... )

The worst part was that when I was talking to the principal about the candy situation he said "absolutely not" when I asked that he talk to the teacher about it (since he maintained that they had too much trouble getting kids to turn in homework already - well, maybe because they're in KINDERGARTEN!)

AND - the dork suggested I "teach my child to say no" to the candy. Yah - how many five year olds are gonna say thanks but no thanks?
